May 23, 2007

The Mid-Pacific Institute hula halau, Pupukahi I Ke Alo O Na Pua, won all the top prizes at the Secondary Schools Hula Kahiko Competition Saturday, May 19, at Kamehameha Schools. The event was sponsored by Kalihi Palama Culture and Arts Society. All awards were in the high school division.

• Kane division, 1st place
• Wahine division, 1st place
• Combined division, 1st place
• Winner of the Hawaiian language award
• Overall winner in the high school division
• Invitation to the Prince Lot Hula Festival

“For me personally, the competition is really an opportunity for growth in the students' abilities,” said Kumu Hula Michael Lanakila Casupang,“It challenges them to push their abilities and more importantly to work together as a group, to put aside differences and work towards a common goal. Representation and perpetuation of our hula genealogy is extremely important as well. My kumu, Robert Cazimero, came to share with the girls on their importance to the art -- that they represent more than just themselves -- but that they represent many generations before them, and the people that composed their songs that they dance.”
