"Whether you are a teacher or a student, you are going to inspire a lot of people," Governor Lingle said as she honored the recipients of the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement teachers and high school students, as well as the regional winners of the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.
Teachers and students from Mililani High School, Maryknoll High School and Mid-Pacific Institute received personalized commendations Aug. 9, from the Governor, who emphasized the positive impact their work will have on the state. "Our ability to raise the standard of living is tied directly to people who have STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills," she said. A key component of the Governor's Hawai‘i Innovation Initiative includes promoting STEM education.
Mid-Pacific Institute was honored for providing its students with a wide variety of science, technology and math programs and for a continued increase in class size and improvement on student scores on AP math and science exams.
Mid Pacific Institute’s math and science AP programs have shown steady growth in recent years, as more and more students are taking and passing AP math and science courses. Mean scores and percentage pass rates are consistently well above the national average. As well as the recognition of academic excellence in math and science, Mid Pacific Institute received a $1000 grant to use for math and science education.
“I thank Dr. Gareth Russell who directs our Honors, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate programs at Mid-Pacific,” said MPI President Joe C. Rice. “Thanks also to the faculty who prepare our AP students academically and in their preparation for AP exams. We commend Candace Kanja (AP Calculus) Judy Dill (AP Statistics); Lyle Chee (AP Biology); Alison Ashford (AP Environmental Science) and Art Merserau, retired (AP Physics) for contributing to making this award happen."
“I am thrilled to hear that MPI has been nationally recognized for its AP program in math and science,” said Dr. “Russell. "To be one of just 50 schools nationally is quite an honor. We are the only school in the state to receive this award. This is great news for Mid Pacific's Math and Science AP programs!”
Mililani High School students Lucia Mocz and Philip Mocz were honored for earning the silver medal at the western region Siemens Competition in math, science and technology. The siblings used complex algorithms to create a computer program that could determine whether a tissue had cancer, which could potentially help scientists come up with a more accurate and timely method of identifying the disease.
Lance Suzuki, an AP statistics teacher at Maryknoll School, was recognized for his exemplary teaching and enthusiastic dedication to AP both inside and outside of school.
