Mid-Pacific Instituite Language arts teacher Maile Chow was recently awarded a grant through the U.S. State Department and the Eurasia/South Asia Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) to travel to the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.
TEA brings teachers from Eurasian and South Asian countries to the U.S. for a six-week stay, where they learn about education and how to better their teaching skills. At the end of their six weeks, the U.S. teachers meet up with them at a conference in Huntsville Alabama where they exchange teaching ideas and practices.
In April, Chow will make a reciprocal visit to Georgia to learn more about that country and to share best teaching practices with teachers there. The Georgian teacher who Chow’s counterpart is Shorena Marakvelidze, a teacher who founded the “Linguistica” foreign language library in her village of Zestaphoni. This library is a great resource for the people there who want to better their English skills.
Because foreign language (English) books and other classroom supplies are limited in Georgia, Chow’s students at MPI have started a supply drive to collect books, monetary donations and other items.
“They have become so enthused about this project that I am starting to worry about getting all of the items over to Georgia!” Chow said. “They have also become penpals with the Georgian students and correspond with them via the internet. We are working on setting up a blog so that we can show the Georgian students pictures of Mid-Pacific Institute and life here in Hawaii. It’s been great to see them get excited about a place and culture many of them had never even heard of before! ”
