In celebration of 100 years on its Manoa campus, Mid-Pacific Institute brought back one of its most cherished traditions: Kite Day!

On Thursday, May 1, 1,500 elementary, middle and high school students gathered on the football field to loft hundreds of colorful kites in various competitions: Most beautiful, most unique, most comical, and smallest (must be able to fly 25 feet in the air). These categories are based on the historical categories used for the Kite Day competitions in the early 1900s.

Kite Day was a huge event at Mills School (one of the three schools that combined to form MPI) in the early 1900s. Traditionally, there were no classes on that day, and people from all over the community attended the event. The school even has a letter from President Herbert Hoover recognizing the event and congratulating the school for its success. There are a number of Kite Day trophies proudly displayed in the MPI Alumni House.

During the 2007-2008 school year, MPI has celebrated 100 Years in Manoa by incorporating school history into classroom activities and alumni events. MPI theater students even devoted a scene in the play 100 Years in Manoa to Kite Day.

TEA brings teachers from Eurasian and South Asian countries to the U.S. for a six-week stay, where they learn about education and how to better their teaching skills. At the end of their six weeks, the U.S. teachers meet up with them at a conference in Huntsville Alabama where they exchange teaching ideas and practices.

In April, Chow will make a reciprocal visit to Georgia to learn more about that country and to share best teaching practices with teachers there. The Georgian teacher who Chow’s counterpart is Shorena Marakvelidze, a teacher who founded the “Linguistica” foreign language library in her village of Zestaphoni. This library is a great resource for the people there who want to better their English skills.

Because foreign language (English) books and other classroom supplies are limited in Georgia, Chow’s students at MPI have started a supply drive to collect books, monetary donations and other items.

“They have become so enthused about this project that I am starting to worry about getting all of the items over to Georgia!” Chow said. “They have also become penpals with the Georgian students and correspond with them via the internet. We are working on setting up a blog so that we can show the Georgian students pictures of Mid-Pacific Institute and life here in Hawaii. It’s been great to see them get excited about a place and culture many of them had never even heard of before! ”

March 8, 2008, 8:30 - 11:30am
Mid-Pacific Institute Preschool & Elementary School

How do we honor the strengths of each child, while at the same time prepare her to be a reflective thinker and positive participant in the community?

Each child has unique patterns of thinking that can be revealed by careful observation of how he plays and explores a wide variety of media such as blocks, clay, drawing, or acting out a pretend scene. These media are part of an expanded definition of literacy, which can be viewed as a type of fluency in representing one’s own thoughts. When a child can represent and revisit her own thinking, this process enables her to rethink her assumptions about how the social and physical world works. And when teachers document a child’s thinking, they too revise their assumptions about what she knows and gain a new basis for high-level conversations with her.

Dr. Forman will lay out this approach and explain how it measures the quality of a child’s thinking without the usual method of counting the number of skills a child has attained. By expanding the definition of literacy to include these and other media, we become more capable of reaching our objective of honoring the strengths of all children as well as better preparing them to fully experience and participate in their community.

George Forman, Ph.D., is a well known author of books that extend the theory of Piaget to early childhood education. He was a research psychologist at Project Zero at Harvard University, working on research about how children symbolize in media such as blocks. clay, paints, etc. Since 1986, Dr. Forman has been working with the city of Reggio Emilia in Italy on their educational model for young children.
His current work looks at pre-primary professional development via digital video on the worldwide web.

A special one-night performance of Shades of our Journey by Lion King cast members, including Moya Angela and Jeremiah Tatum, enchanted the audience Nov.26. These talented performers and musicians were showcased in a cabaret setting at the Cupola Theatre in the Honolulu Design Center. The show reflected the different shades of each performer's personal experience. For the performers, this was a way to give back to the community for its support of the Lion King. The $1,750 proceeds of this performance were donated to Mid-Pacific Institute during a recent visit to campus.
The middle school student council held its first Leadership Camp on Friday, Nov. 16. Members of the 8th grade executive council suggested having one to get to know their fellow council members in the 6th & 7th grade. The 8th graders had attended a similar leadership camp in August with the high school SGA and class officers. They found that experience very rewarding, as they participated in various games and team building activities alongside other student leaders.

As a community service project, the student council also used this opportunity to share their holiday spirit with some soldiers in Iraq. Shaun Marie Aquino, an 8th grader here at MPI and her mother Kalsie and brother Jaron joined us as the council members packed boxes of gifts and aloha to send to her dad, SSG Maurice Aquino. He has been there since April and will not be home until August. Council members brought macadamia nuts, Hawaiian calendars, li hing mui, and all kinds of goodies to help their holidays go a little smoother. The 16 boxes should be arriving in Iraq any day!

Staff Sergeant Maurice Aquino is with the Task Force XII, 12th CAB Combat Aviation Brigade. The Brigade’s mission while in Iraq is to move troops safely. Most flying is done while everyone is sleeping with no lights on, flying very low and very fast.

A big “thank you” to council members Kimberly Weeks, Jessilyn Lizama, Summer Shigetani, Kaitlin Hunter, Dyani Chock, Annette Lee, and Nicole Sato for planning the evening full of activities. We also appreciate faculty members Dr. Priester, Mrs. Ikeda, Mr. Muramaru, Mrs. Lee, and Mrs. Kurashige for spending the evening with us.

Mrs. Aquino also sent us a thank you note….
I wanted to thank you so very much for the special evening. We were all touched by the generosity and kindness from each child. You have a special bunch of future leaders for Mid-Pac and the community. I know my husband will be so touched by all this aloha. He expressed to me a couple of weeks ago that lots of the guys from his unit (about 70) feel as if they were forgotten by the people of Hawaii. There is no media coverage or recognition about them, so they were feeling a little down. With these boxes from Mid-Pac, I know this will turn their emotions around and give them a very important feeling of encouragement and love, especially during the holidays away from family and friends.

Please thank everyone there last night and I am sure the troops will be thanking them once they get the boxes.

Kalsie

Information on Staff Sergeant Maurice Aquino:
Maurice Aquino joined the Hawaii Army National Guard as a senior in high school in 1980. He is a Staff Sergeant, a Crew Chief as well as a Crew Chief Standardization Instructor. He has been in the National Guard for 27 years. He has over 2,000 hours of flight time. As a Crew Chief his duties include organizing and performing maintenance of the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, performs pre-flight, post-flight and flight inspections of the helicopter, working the machine gun on the helicopter and being in charge of the crew on board the helicopter during flight. Normally he is with the Charlie Company, 1st Battalion 207th Aviation Regiment based at Hilo, Hawaii. After being activated in April 2007 they were attached to the 2-147 AHB Assault Helicoper Battalion which is from Minnesota and they are now called Bravo Company 2 – 147 AHB. While in Iraq the Battalion is attached to Task Force XII, 12th CAB Combat Aviation Brigade. The 12th CAB is stationed in Germany.

While in Hilo there are 8 UH_60L helicopters and their mission in Air Assault. They carry troops where ever they need to go, they can carry up to ten combat troops with a crew of four. They also have State missions when called upon by the Governor of Hawaii. If they are activated by the Governor, they support situations such as hurricane relief, earthquake relief, or fighting brush fires. They also assisted with the Koloko dam disaster a year ago. They have also provided air medical transportation to the island of Oahu while the active duty MEDEVAC unit was delayed to Iraq.

Their mission while in Iraq is to move troops safely. Most flying is done while everyone is sleeping with no lights on, flying very low and very fast.

Maurice left Hawaii for training in April 2007 and arrived in Iraq August 2007. He will be in Iraq until August 2008 hopefully if not extended for a longer tour.

This year you will see the 100 Years in Manoa logo on our web site, on all major school publications and around campus on a set of new banners. It's our way of commemorating a century (1908-2008) of fine work on our beautiful Manoa campus.

Reflecting on our history, we celebrate the joining of three fine schools--Kawaiaha'o Seminary (1864), Mills Institute (1892), and Epiphany School (1937).

These three distinct and vibrant school traditions created the foundation for what Mid-Pacific is today: a truly unique and inspiring preschool through grade 12 school.
Nimoy was so taken with James’ interest, that the actor invited the MPI Elementary School student up to the stage. James made such a positive impression on the Star Trek icon, that he was invited to contribute to a special Star Trek blog (www.trekmovie.com) as a youth correspondent.
