Thanks for Coming to Open House

Open House
We had perfect attendance at Open House last night!  Thank you to every family for sending at least one parent to visit our classroom.  When the children walked in the room this morning, they were thrilled with the letters and pictures left by their parents; it was almost as exciting as Christmas morning (with an emphasis on the word almost).  I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as I did.  No wonder we have such a great group of students...they all have wonderful parents!

Spelling
Our first spelling test of the year went very well!  The students did a great job with their spelling-word sentences in their homework journals.  They will bring home a new list of words and their spelling test in their homework journals on Friday.  Please keep all spelling tests and other corrected homework sheets from previous weeks at home.  Once I check the homework, it is yours to keep (with the exception of their homework journal and reading log).

First Grade Math
The first graders had a blast in math today.  We learned a new game called Roll and Record.  Working in pairs, the students took turns rolling two dice, adding the numbers, and recording the sum on a recording sheet.  The game ends when one column is full.  The students got very excited to see which number would "win."  Most groups had winning numbers of 5, 6, 7, and 8.  Hmmm, why were those numbers so popular?  We have also been working on visualizing and retelling the action described in addition story-problems.  This week, each student had the opportunity to model the action of various addition problems with math manipulatives.  We then used pictures and standard notation (+ and =) to represent the story-problem.  Story-problems are a great way for you to practice both language and math skills with your child while driving in the car, waiting in line at the store, or doing just about anything else!

Second grade parents, please check out Ms. Revard's class site for pictures and explanations of the second grade math activities!

Box Tops for Education
We already have some Box Tops coupons in our blue class box!!!  Whenever you come across a Box Top coupon on a package, please clip it and send it to school with your child.  Let's turn this school fundraiser into an opportunity for motivating the students to help contribute to their school and focus on math at the same time.  We will count, add, and graph the data to keep track of what our class collects.  If the children love cereal as much as Ms. Field does, our collection box will be overflowing in no time!

Book Orders
The first book order of the year will be sent home in your child's homework folder on Friday.  These book orders are completely optional.  If you would like to order any books, please complete the order form and return it with a check by Thursday, September 6.
