Kite Day, Family Science Night, Graphic Design, and Opera - May 2, 2008

Kite Day
On a bright and sunny morning, the entire Mid-Pacific Institute student body gathered on the football field for Kite Day.  At our elementary school assembly on Thursday morning, Mrs. Jenkins explained the history of Kite Day, which began in 1910.  The event was popular with the boys who attended Mills Institute; the students designed and flew kites annually until 1934, when the tradition of Kite Day took a long break (a seventy-four-year break).  Yesterday signaled the rebirth of Kite Day, when all the students of Mid-Pacific Institute joined together to fly kites. 

For the last few weeks, the elementary students practiced kite-flying skills during P.E. (keep your back to the wind; if your kite falls to the ground, roll the string before walking to pick up your kite; be patient; and have fun).  In class, the students designed an image to draw on their kite.  We have some excellent kite designers and kite flyers in our class!  Check out the photo gallery for some pictures of the event.



Family Science Night
Thank you to every family for joining us at the Family Science Night with activities from the Bishop Museum!  The dining room was abuzz with learning and socialization Thursday night.  A special mahalo to all the parents who organized the food, volunteered during the event, and helped with set-up and clean-up!  Check out the photo gallery for some pictures (I did my best to get photos of everyone, but if I missed you and your child, I apologize).


Graphic Design Presentation
Thank you to Mr. Cheng (TC's father) for teaching our class about being a graphic designer and showing us some of the elements that went into creating the poster to advertise Kahalaopuna, the opera.  The students applied what they learned from Mr. Cheng about graphic design and worked with Mr. Cheng to create the design for the opera tickets.


Opera Information
On both Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10:

• All children will report to their classrooms by 5:00 pm.
• They should be dressed in board shorts or surf shorts, a t-shirt, and slippers.
  
• Girls should have their hair in a ponytail.
• In the classroom the children will receive their costume bag.
  
• They will change their t-shirts into the official program t-shirt provided by the school and their capes or other costuming.
  
• They will place the t-shirt they wore to school in their costume bag (with their name on it). 
• The teacher will walk the students down to Scudder Hall for warm-up. The children will bring their costume bag with them.
• Upon completion of the opera, the children will return to Scudder, where they will change back into their own t-shirts (girls will change in the kitchen area), neatly fold their performance t-shirt and cape or other costuming, and replace it in their costume bag.
• Children will be dismissed from Scudder Hall after their change and parents have signed them out.
