Kite Day, Family Science Night, Graphic Design, and Opera - May 2, 2008

Kite Day
On a bright and sunny morning, the entire Mid-Pacific Institute student body gathered on the football field for Kite Day. At our elementary school assembly on Thursday morning, Mrs. Jenkins explained the history of Kite Day, which began in 1910. The event was popular with the boys who attended Mills Institute; the students designed and flew kites annually until 1934, when the tradition of Kite Day took a long break (a seventy-four-year break). Yesterday signaled the rebirth of Kite Day, when all the students of Mid-Pacific Institute joined together to fly kites.

For the last few weeks, the elementary students practiced kite-flying skills during P.E. (keep your back to the wind; if your kite falls to the ground, roll the string before walking to pick up your kite; be patient; and have fun). In class, the students designed an image to draw on their kite. We have some excellent kite designers and kite flyers in our class! Check out the photo gallery for some pictures of the event.

Family Science Night
Thank you to every family for joining us at the Family Science Night with activities from the Bishop Museum! The dining room was abuzz with learning and socialization Thursday night. A special mahalo to all the parents who organized the food, volunteered during the event, and helped with set-up and clean-up! Check out the photo gallery for some pictures (I did my best to get photos of everyone, but if I missed you and your child, I apologize).

Graphic Design Presentation
Thank you to Mr. Cheng (TC's father) for teaching our class about being a graphic designer and showing us some of the elements that went into creating the poster to advertise Kahalaopuna, the opera. The students applied what they learned from Mr. Cheng about graphic design and worked with Mr. Cheng to create the design for the opera tickets.

Opera Information
On both Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10:

All children will report to their classrooms by 5:00 pm.

They should be dressed in board shorts or surf shorts, a t-shirt, and slippers.

Girls should have their hair in a ponytail.

In the classroom the children will receive their costume bag.

They will

"Go Fly A Kite!" - April 24, 2008

Kite Day
As part of our "100 years in Manoa" celebration, MPI is resurrecting the kite-day tradition this year for a special kite-flying event. On Thursday, May 1, from 9:45 to 11:20 am, students from preschool through high school will gather on the football field to display and fly their kites. This week, our class began designing what will go on their kites. Mrs. Jenkins and Mr. Black (5th grade) have been busy designing and testing kites to engineer the best kite possible for our elementary students. Thanks to their hard work and the Manoa breezes, our students have a model to work with. On Kite Day, we will head down to the football field to fly our kites with the rest of the MPI students.

We would love to have some parents help out with this event. With each student flying a kite, there will certainly be some strings to untie and some last-minute repairs. If you are available from 9:45 to 11:20 am on Thursday, May 1, and are interested in joining our class "kite pit-crew," please contact room mothers Tracy McConnell or Laura Adams.

Family Science Night
We're very excited with all the "yes" RSVPs for the Family Science Night on Thursday, May 1. Once again, we're calling on some volunteers. (Room mothers Tracy McConnell and Laura Adams are organizing the food and volunteer effort.) If you are available to do the following, please contact Tracy or Laura.

Needed:
- 1 strong person to help unload supplies and set up at 4:30 and help break down at 8:00 (until 8:30).
- 3 adults to man the stations during the science fair.
Volunteers should arrive at 5:15 for an explanation from the Bishop
Museum staff and then plan to man the stations from 6:00 to 8:00. We
will make sure that the volunteers have time to eat dinner.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Family Science Night and upcoming Opera events! As always, thank you for your enthusiasm and support. Your children are wonderful! You can tell from the photos below that they love our weekly Star Dance Parties. The move of last week was the "macarena."

The Adventures of Wailele's Water
Click on the file below to watch the movie that our class made using iMovie! At the beginning of our inquiry on Wailele spring, the students asked, "Where does the water come from and go to?" Since the students were curious about how water gets in and out of Wailele, we focused our inquiry on this essential question. The students used various resources such as Google Earth, books, interactive websites, and presentations from experts knowledgeable about Wailele to investigate Wailele's water system. During our inquiry, the students decided to write a play about water drops who take an adventure through the water cycle. The students discussed the elements of the story and dictated the lines while I typed the words on the SmartBoard. After practicing their parts, the students recorded their lines and illustrated pictures. We combined the audio and visual elements using iMovie to bring you this exciting adventure that combines a creative story with facts about the water cycle and Wailele.

Water Play.mov

Physical Science Inquiry
Our final inquiry unit of the year involves physical science. The scientists in Room 11 are enthusiastically making hypotheses, writing detailed observations, sketching, and coming up with insightful conclusions for our experiments. Last week we started exploring matter and conducting experiments to answer the following questions: What are the properties of solids, liquids, and gases? What happens when matter is heated? Does temperature change matter? What happens when matter is cooled? After discussing the experiments, the students concluded that:

Matter is anything that takes up space and has weight.

Solids have a shape of their own.

Liquids take the shape of the container they are in and go every direction except upwards.

Gases have no shape, take up the maximum space possible, and expand in all directions.

When matter is heated, it changes from a solid to a liquid and then to gas.

Temperature changes matter. Heating something will cause it to get big (expand) and cooling it will cause it to get small (contract).

When matter is cooled, it changes from the gaseous (or vaporous) state to the liquid state and from the liquid to the solid state.

The students also turned into molecules and acted like gas, liquid, and solid molecules. Match the pictures below to the correct state of matter. (Hint: Gas molecules bounce all over and spread out, liquid molecules spread out a little but stay inside their container, and solid molecules huddle close together and hardly move.)

First Grade Math - Finishing up Unit 7
In Unit 7, we have been focusing on color, shape, and number patterns. The numerous investigations provide the students with opportunities to create, describe, and extend repeating patters with two of three alternating elements. Throughout the unit, the students have been describing and analyzing various patterns and finding the unit of the repeating pattern, such as AB, ABC, AAB, and ABB. In addition to color and shape patterns, the students investigated number sequences using three situations (collecting pennies in a jar, making Staircase Towers with connecting cubes, and making repeating shape patterns). Here is an example of a penny-jar problem: There are three pennies in the jar. What would happen if we added two pennies each day for 10 days? The students discovered that the constant rate of change for this problem is two.

Looking ahead to the last two units...Our first-grade math-class goal is to finish all the units by the end of the school year. The students are very motivated to get to the end of their workbook, so each day during math we use every moment possible to explore the concepts and reinforce understanding. Next week will take us into Unit 8: Twos, Fives, and Tens, where the students will develop strategies for efficient counting and focus on the number sequence from 1 to 100. Finally, the investigations in Unit 9 introduce the students to 3-D geometry. There will be lots of exciting learning in the weeks ahead!

Thank You
Thank you to TC for bringing in delicious mochi to celebrate her birthday! Thank you to ER for the yummy Jamba Juice, doughnuts, and bag of treats to celebrate his birthday! Thank you also to ER for the crickets and silk worms for our Jackson chameleons. Thank you to AW for the special shortbread Girl Scout cookies!

Playwrights - March 6, 2008

Playwrights
We are putting the final touches on our class play about the adventure of drops of water as they travel through the water cycle (the title of our play is one of those final touches). The entire class has been involved in the writing process. We came up with a cast of characters that takes the audience on an entertaining trip through the water cycle. Our list of characters includes Ocean Water, Water Vapor, Sun, Cloud, Tap Water, Wailele Water, Turtle, Crayfish, Manoa Stream Water, Drain Water, and Ala Wai Water. The story begins and ends in the lovely ocean. And the middle of the play? Well, that's the exciting adventure!

It's truly been a team effort to write our script. The students have been engaged in lively discussions about what happens in the story and how it occurs. With the help of technology, we can stay up to speed with the discussions. As a child shares their idea or line of dialogue, I type the comment on the computer, which all the students can read on the SmartBoard. Let me tell you, the children are fabulous editors and tactful commentators. They catch everything that is misspelled or doesn't make sense. Our class goal is to have our play completed before Spring Break. We're going to do a virtual performance (again, thanks to technology). The students will create a puppet for their character. I will videotape their puppet show/play and then put the play online!

Water Engineers
Yesterday afternoon, we discovered the path of water from Wailele to the drains on campus. Using Google Earth, the students viewed the landscape of MPI from a bird's-eye view. We then walked the route that water takes from Wailele to the drain at the bottom of the football field to the drain in the canal between MPI and UH. The students made keen observations about the level of the land and how the drain by the football field was much lower than the drain where water leaves Wailele, so the water must be flowing downhill. The students then drew their own maps showing the path of water. Based on the visual representations created by the students, we have some future architects and engineers in our class. Our expedition was a perfect connection to our Wailele water cycle play!

Wailele's Water

Expert Speaker about Wailele
Seated on the sloping hill next to Wailele, the first- and second-grade classes enjoyed a thought-provoking discussion with Hank Howlett, Director of MPI's Facilities and Maintenance. Mr. Howlett provided the students with an abundance of information about the spring on campus, and the students asked questions that we have been pondering since the start of our inquiry.

After our talk with Mr. Howlett, the children reflected on what they learned:

What did we learn from Mr. Howlett?

We’re not sure how old Wailele is.

Wailele’s water comes from Manoa Falls. It has an underground tunnel like veins.

It’s not polluted. It has organic material from the things inside the pond, like the turtles, crayfish, and fish.

If you boil the water, you could probably drink it.

Trash blows in. People sometimes throw in trash.

It’s a spring. Underground water feeds the water source.

We’re not sure if it ever had hot water.

The fence was for protection for little kids who don’t know how to swim and might drown. Also dogs, cats, and other animals.

Wailele used to be really big. When they built the fields, they put concrete around the edges.

Water never flows uphill. It always flows down.

Sea level is the level of the sea.

Elevation is the height between sea level and the height we’re at now.

Sometimes when the water is really high, it goes out of the spring and onto the field.

When the water gets high, it goes down the drain, down a bigger drain, into the Ala Wai Canal, and into the ocean.

The water goes from the roofs to the broken pipe to the field.

When the water is low, the spring gets dry, so the maintenance workers put water in it so the fish and turtles stay alive.

There are one big turtle and three small turtles. The turtles grow every day. Somebody put the turtles in the spring.

Water sometimes goes through the cracks and onto the field. They’re working on the drainage pipe. They’re working on cleaning the spring of trash.

When it rains, the water can flood the field (make puddles). It fills up the spring. The water can evaporate, or it can go into the ground (percolate).

Thinking back to our previous questions...

Where does the water come from and go?

Why is there a fence?

Is the water polluted?

    What hypotheses were correct?

The fence is there so people do not fall in.

The water is not polluted.

The water comes from the back of the valley, the underground tunnels or rivers, and then it goes to the ocean.

Our class has been working with Ms. Revard's class throughout the inquiry process. It really adds to the insightful
comments when we have the ideas of 36 children and two teachers! The first- and second-grade classes have also been videotaping the discussions and the path of our inquiry. We're looking forward to sharing the inquiry process using a podcast. The teachers are experimenting with iMovie and editing all the video clips. It's a great opportunity for us to reflect on our teaching, the students' learning, and the use of technology to capture and convey all the wonderful learning that occurs at MPI!

Most of our discussions and learning have focused on the science of Wailele (in particular the water cycle). Next week, we will turn to the culture surrounding Wailele. Ms. Graves and Mrs. Montes will be sharing what their sixth grade students discovered about life in ancient Hawaiian days, at the time when MPI was founded, and in the present day with respect to Wailele and water. We're very excited to learn from the sixth graders and their teachers!

Jack, Sumo, and Rascal
With the addition of a large aquarium for our Jackson chameleons, we set up house for Sumo and Rascal. During our Jackson chameleon research, we read about how chameleons are not sociable animals and will fight to defend their territory against other chameleons. Some students pointed out that there are numerous chameleons in a cage at the pet store. We figured we'd give Sumo and Rascal a chance to be roommates. At first their housing situation seemed to be working out just fine. However, conflict quickly arose during math class. Being the keen observers that the children are, they noticed a combat breaking out in the aquarium. "Ms. Field, the two Jackson chameleons are fighting!" Sumo and Rascal have not been trained in peer mediation like students at MPI, so rather than try to resolve the situation we realized that Jackson chameleons truly are territorial and the only solution was to separate the two animals. It was quite thrilling to witness animal nature in our classroom. Sumo opened his mouth, hissed, and turned light green. He also turned sideways to appear bigger than he looks from the front. Rascal was not intimidated, and had it not been for the intervention a fight would have occurred. With the removal of Rascal, Sumo is now content, but curious about Jack, who is in the neighboring cage.

Thank You
Thank you to the Ramirez family for letting us borrow a large aquarium to house one of our Jackson chameleons (at the moment, it's Sumo). Thank you to the Kim family for bringing in a "Chameleon's Bento" consisting of plump silkworms and mulberry leaves for our four-legged friends.

What's in the Buckets?
On Monday, I "surprised" the class with two "things" that my brothers found over the long weekend. Two buckets sitting atop a shelf housed the surprises, and with anxious anticipation the students wrote down their predictions, explained the reasoning for their predictions, and came up with questions they would ask me to find out if their prediction was correct. After brainstorming during Writer's Workshop, the students shared their questions with the class, and I proceeded to answer the questions. Before revealing the "surprise," the students' questions taught them the following about what was in the buckets: The "surprise"....does not live in water; is a vertebrate; does not lay eggs; is not a cannibal (usually); has horns; is not a plant; is not a type of fish; sometimes changes color; does not eat leaves; is a reptile; eats crickets. After hearing these hints, the children cheered, "It's Jackson chameleons!" The children enjoyed the show-and-tell with both Jackson chameleons. The small guy was the first one out of the bucket, but he ran too fast and scampered around the carpet...the class now calls him "Rascal." The big boy's name is still up for debate: either "Shaq" (since he's so large), "Victor" (since he would be the victorious one in a fight), or "Struck" (since he was almost struck by a car in the street before he was picked up).

Due to the voracious appetites of these creatures, keeping them as class pets was initially out of the question. However, the children have stepped up to the plate, and some of them have volunteered to take turns bringing in crickets and the likes for our Jacksons. It's thrilling to watch the Jackson chameleons hunt their food. Yesterday we read about Jackson chameleons and discovered that their tongue is one-and-a-half times as long as their body. No wonder they can be perched on a twig and make a meal out of a cricket on the other side of the cage. We've also been coming up with great word problems about our class mascots. If there are 3 Jackson chameleons in a cage and each Jackson eats 8 crickets a day, how many crickets do we need to put in the cage each day? Thank you to LW and ER for bringing in crickets and "yummy" worms for Jack, Rascal, and Big Boy (for now).

Thank You
Thank you to Torry Montes for coming to our classroom to teach us about adoption and celebrate EM's Happy Adoption Day! We loved learning about EM's experience and enjoyed the delicious homemade brownies. Thank you to JH for the special rice krispee treats!

Writing Enthusiasts! February 15, 2008

Valentine's Day Writing
Our classroom was filled with future Hallmark-card creators this week. It was heartwarming to witness the eagerness with which the students created valentines for their family and friends. Sentiments of friendship and love were accompanied by illustrations of colorful hearts and flowers. A holiday centered around writing and expressing friendship to others...I love it!

First Grade Math
In Unit 6, the first grade mathematicians are focusing on number composition, whole number operations, and proper representation of mathematical thinking. The students are enjoying playing math games such as "Make 10" and "Tens go Fish" to develop fluency with combinations of 10. Have your child teach you the rules of these games, then play along with them at home!

Kung Hee Fat Choy - February 8, 2005

Rainy Day Adventure
On a rainy morning last week, our class journeyed down to the Wailele spring to observe the effect of rain on it. Dressed in raincoats and rubber boots, the children tromped through the soggy football field on their way to the spring. It was tempting to go puddlehopping, but most students resisted the urge and walked around the large puddles. When we arrived at Wailele, students were pleasantly surprised at how much the water level had changed. The rocks that were above water a couple weeks ago were now submerged. Water was also quickly flowing down the drain on the side of the spring. As the students first predicted during our "pre-rain" visit, the rain does make the water level rise. We're very curious about where the grated drain in the spring takes the water. Hmmm, that's what we're investigating now.
