Personal Timelines

If you haven't had a chance to look at our photo gallery recently, be sure to do so. As one parent recently stated to me, "For those of us who are unable to take time from work to volunteer in the classroom, the photos truly give us a glimpse into what our children are doing at school."

The first group of photos shows each student proudly posing with their personal timeline. As each child stood in front of our class, sharing with us the important and significant events of his life, each of us learned how accomplished and talented each and every child is in our classroom. What may have begun as an individual project, ended up bringing our class closer together. The children realized they have much more in common than they were aware of.

Some milestones room 12 has in common included: learning to ride a two- wheeled bike, losing a first tooth, a first airplane ride, and seeing snow for the first time. We are a classroom of athletes, musicians, artists, dancers and performers. We are a group that loves our parents, grandparents, siblings and pets. Room 12 is an adventurous bunch, with many miles logged traveling. We have visited the neighbor islands, the mainland and other countries.

It was very heartwarming to hear students bond with each other while sharing some of the changes they have experienced. Students discussed moving to new homes, switching schools, having a friend move away, losing a beloved pet and also the loss of a grandparent.

This project ended up being much more than a personal timeline. The goal was to learn how the timeline of creation works by first looking at how each of our own timelines work. While the project met that particular goal, it also served to bond our class even closer and to appreciate all the joys, triumphs and hurts each of us has experienced.

The other photos show recent activities leading up to Spooktivity. Thank you to all the parents who came to help our class make the adorable bats and pumpkins that are adorning the Wilcox Dining Room. Another mahalo to all the families that donated pumpkins and came to help with pumpkin carving. The children beam with pride any time someone from their family visits our classroom. It doesn't matter if you are helping with an activity, chaperoning a field trip, dropping off a donation, reading to the class, watching a presentation or sharing some of your own expertise. Your children are thrilled anytime you visit. Keep that in mind for tomorrow, if you are able to take a late lunch break, be sure to join us anytime between 12:30-2:00 for Spooktivity. Children are free to leave at 2:00 after the event.
