Inquiry Explorations
The children are becoming totally immersed in their study of Geography. I borrowed 44 books from the library on Tuesday and had them on tables here and there around the room when they came back from Art. Even though it was lunchtime, they ran to the tables, cheering loudly and exclaiming, “Ms. Revard got us some books!” and asking, “Can we look at them now?” It warms the cockles of a teacher’s heart to experience such delight and enthusiasm for learning in her students!
Be sure to engage your child in conversations about what we are learning in Inquiry. They are currently finishing up big world maps, labeling and coloring the continents. We have talked already about a wide variety of topics from plate tectonics (ask about India’s plate hitting mainland Asia ) to how the continents broke apart from the super-continent, Pangaea, that existed in dinosaur times. The children are excited about the interactive web site, “Google Earth.” Download it and go on incredible adventures all over the earth with your child.
Captain John will come today to do the lesson on magnetic north, the earth’s hemispheres, the compass, and way-finding. We are all very eager to learn from such an experienced captain and navigator. The best part will be using our compasses to find treasure!
In a couple of weeks, I will be sending a sign-up sheet for those parents, grandparents, and friends who would like to come in and share their knowledge of the world with us. The children have already told me about the willingness of many of you to be a part of our Inquiry investigations. Thank you, for your continuing support of me and the students!
Photos will be posted in the gallery on Friday afternoon. Be sure and check them out.
