Aloha, Parents, Students, and 'Ohana:

We are halfway finished with Math Adventures! I hope that your child is enjoying the class so far and is excited about being a mathematician.

The students were engaged this third week with new activities such as:

Our School Assembly: Students got on stage and shared what the mathematicians are learning so far.
Geometry: Students made their own geometric solids.
Fractions: Students made their own fraction pizza kits in order to prepare for our pizza party on the last day. We also have been building and playing fraction showdown games (comparing and contrasting different ways to make a whole), drawing fractions on the SmartBoard, and playing fraction dominoes.

Aloha, Parents, Students, and 'Ohana:

We just finished our second week of learning (10 of 30 sessions). Where has the time gone? We've been enjoying each other so much — the days have flown by in the blink of an eye.

The students were engaged this second week with:
-Community team-building activities - Balancing Ball
-Computation practice - Addition and subtraction, using counting cubes
-Geometry - Free-standing Tower Building, Pattern Blocks, and Geoboards

Aloha, Parents, Students, and 'Ohana: We are off to a great start with some wonderful learning activities this first week of school. We have been exploring and reviewing concepts such as time, measurement (height, weight, liquid, objects in the classroom), data collection, bar graphing, computation practice, and community team-building activities. Aloha, Parents, Students, and 'Ohana: This is the last blog so I hope you enjoy it! The students have learned so much this past six weeks (twenty-eight days) and I've enjoyed watching them grow and work as a team. We've all created new friends, had fun together, but now it's time to go our separate ways. I'm going to miss your children and I wish them the very best in the coming future of their education. Thank-you so much for your support this summer. The students were engaged this last week with community team-building activities, board games, problem solving, and geometry. Check out the pictures below to see some of the activities we enjoyed. Aloha, Shawn Williamson For teambuilding, we went outside and did some relay races with the tricycle and pogo balls. The students really enjoyed this! We've been playing board games such as: Checkers, Chess, Connect Four, and Sorry. These students are practicing their problem solving skills. We reviewed the steps for solving word problems and then they worked in groups to solve different ones. For Geometry, we practiced making different shapes, lines, and angles with the geoboards, protractors, and free-build time. Thanks again for your support and have a great rest of the summer. 1 Week Left!

Aloha, Parents, Students, and 'Ohana: Believe it or not, we only have five days left of summer school. We have accomplished twenty-three days of learning so far and only have five remaining. I would like to take this opportunity and invite you to our pizza party and iPhoto slide show on the last day of school, July 20th, starting at 11:00 and ending at 12:00. I hope all of you can make it and enjoy this last time together. The students were engaged this week with community team-building activities, arithmetic practice (in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, money, and time), and geometry. Check out the pictures below to see some of the activities we enjoyed. Aloha, Shawn Williamson For teambuilding, we researched and designed our own paper airplanes. There were three categories that they could participate in: the farthest, best trick, and most creative. The students really had fun doing this. These students are practicing computation skills. These students are exploring with Pattern Blocks to make puzzles. Free Geometric Building time! More 3 D images that the students made. Eighteen Days of Fun so Far!

Aloha, Parents, Students, and 'Ohana: Hope you all have a great 4th of July and day off! We have accomplished eighteen days of learning so far and only have ten remaining. Where has the time gone? We've been enjoying each other so much — the days have flown by in the blink of an eye. The students were engaged this short week with community team-building activities, arithmetic practice (in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, money, and time), Uno, geometry, computer math games, and SmartBoard fun. Check out the pictures below to see some of the activities we enjoyed. Aloha, Mr. Shawn Williamson These pictures were taken at our school assembly. Students from each class volunteered to share a few things they've been learning so far. We shared about fractions, Yahtzee, facts practice, time, and liquid measurement. For team-building, we played Pictionary on the SmartBoard. The class was divided into two teams. One person had to draw an image, and the rest of the team had to guess it within a minute. These students are practicing their computation skills with fractions, time, and money. We've been learning how to play the card game, Uno. Geometry-These students are drawing 3-D images of a cube, rectangular solid, pyramid, cone, and sphere, and then they had to make one of them. Geometric Solid Building Fun! These students are working with pattern blocks using hexagons, rhombuses, triangles, squares, and trapezoids to make bigger shapes.

Aloha, Parents, Students, and 'Ohana: Hafway there, and we are still having a lot of fun! The students were engaged this week with community team-building, arithmetic practice (in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, money, and time), fractions, percentages, computer math games, and SmartBoard fun. Check out the pictures below to see some of the activities we enjoyed. Aloha, Mr. Shawn Williamson "I CAN'T MOVE! Maybe I need to work with my team so we can get going?" Three-truths-and-a-fib activity! Students wrote four statements about themselves. The others had to guess which of the four statements was false. Pass the hula hoop without hitting the ground or unlocking arms. Tug-of-war, anyone? Some more arithmetic practice with money, time, addition, subtraction, and multiplication! The students made pizza fraction kits with 1/2s, 1/3s,1/4s, 1/5s, 1/8s, and 1/10s, then colored them with their favorite toppings. These students "made" a pizza by playing a fraction game with dice. These students played a game called Fraction Dominoes, in which they had to match the fraction with the picture. The first person to get rid of their dominoes won. "Check out my fractions!" WEEK 2...OH, IT FLEW!

Aloha, Parents, Students, and 'Ohana: Another week has flown by! The students were engaged with community team-building, computation practice (in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), board game strategies, money counts, graphing M&M's, and SmartBoard fun. Check out the pictures below to see some of the activities they're enjoying. Aloha for your support, Mr. Shawn Williamson Here are a few students working on their team-building questions. They had to come up with eight different topic questions to help them understand each other better. These students are working on building a free-standing tower using toothpicks and gumdrops. These students are playing Yahtzee, which is a probability dice game that involves computation skills in addition, subtraction, and multiplication. They have also been doing daily facts practice with flash cards and timed drills to build up their skills. Board games, anyone? The students are studying different board games, including Monopoly, Sorry, Chess, and Checkers, to get ideas for their own board game invention. Would you like to challenge us in chess? "The Force be with you, Luke, as you play Star Wars Monopoly!" Here are a few students working on M&M graphing and discovering probability at the same time. "Oh...these M&M's look good. Too bad I can't eat them!" These students are practicing different ways of combining coins. This activity builds their computation skills. SmartBoard fun! Every morning, the students work on computation practice using computer technology. Hope you enjoyed this week's fun as much as we did. Until next week!
