Big Island Wrap-up

Hi, everyone! Ms. Correia here to let you know what the Beeg Bugs have been up to since returning from Spring Break. This week, as well as next week, I will be completing my solo teaching period, which is a requirement for my College of Education program. This means that I will be responsible for planning and instruction, and will be acting as the lead teacher. It has been a fun and exciting week for both me and the Beeg Bugs. Read on to find out more about our Big Island Wrap-up projects.

We have mainly been working on wrapping up some Big Island projects. Before the break, the students began writing some very thoughtful thank-you notes for the many people who made our Big Island trip memorable, including the staff members of Mokupapapa, the Tsunami Museum, ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, K.M.C., and the Visitors' Center. We also decided to thank Mr. and Mrs. Correia (Ms. Correia’s parents) for picking up our lunches on the first day of our trip, as well as Mayor Harry Kim for giving each and every Beeg Bug a set of wonderful Big Island souvenirs.

During Hawaiian Studies, the Beeg Bugs have been working diligently on gathering the data collected by their classmates while on the trip. Most of you will remember the many tasks that the children needed to complete at each of the various stops we made. Upon our return to school soon after the trip, each student transferred their responses from their mini-notebooks to a separate sheet of paper, which they then gave to the group who assigned the tasks. The groups have now compiled their information and will be brainstorming about how they will present the class findings on their very own group bulletin board in our classroom. I am really looking forward to seeing what they come up with. We have some very creative minds in our class.

There are just a few reminders for next week. On Tuesday, working drafts are due for the second writing piece to be published. These drafts can be either handwritten or typed, and if their draft is already completed the students will continue working on the next steps on their checklist. The second reminder is that we have another field trip to the Bishop Museum coming up on Thursday. However, there is no need to pack a home lunch this time since we will be returning to school in time for lunch. That wraps it up for this week. Have a fun and safe Easter weekend!
