Homework Update

Please check out our homework section for a homework schedule and checklist.  Your children will get a homework schedule each Friday that outlines what the homework will be for the week.  They will also get a homework checklist that they should use to keep track of their assignments and when they complete them.  They should turn this checklist in on Thursday along with the rest of their homework.  This is also a tool for us to communicate about their homework.  I will send their checklist back home to you on Friday, hopefully with checks in all the boxes saying that their homework was complete and that I received it.  If, unfortunately, something was missing, I will note it and tell you what the consequence was or what they still need to do; you will sign it to send back to me.

Vocabulary:  Vocabulary homework will be writing a story or writing piece with their 5 vocabulary words from this week.  Here is a copy of the instructions that I gave them and a sample piece that I started and the class helped me finish: Vocabulary Story Instructions.pdf vocabulary story example.pdf .

Scholastic NewsScholastic News is a news magazine written for kids.  This week's homework is to read the whole Scholastic News magazine and answer the questions.  The children have an answer sheet to record their answers.  They should also be creating vocabulary journal sheets for the vocabulary words given in the Scholastic News magazine.  There is a book order as part of Scholastic News.  If you would like to order books, please make out a check to Scholastic and turn it in by Thursday, 9/6/07.

***One hint for writing the vocabulary definition in their own words is to read more than one definition.  When we did "treason" as a class, we shared several definitions from different sources.  Because we heard so many different ways of saying the same thing, it made more sense, and the students were able to find a way to define it in their own words.  I know you probably don't have multiple dictionaries lying around your house, but you could also use the computer as a resource.
