The Hawaiian Stars did an outstanding job on their book report project presentations on Monday. We had ten parents attend the presentations, and everyone appreciated having them here. The content of the memorized speeches included all of the required elements, and the visual aids were creative and well done. Almost everyone received four stars, which means they were able to meet all the requirements for the assignment, but a few received five stars for their extra effort and creativity. Our new students did a great job on their first projects, and we are looking forward to many more creative and outstanding projects in the future.
BK celebrated his birthday with a huge chocolate chip cookie, luggage tags for everyone, and two books for the classroom library. They are Runaway Ralph, by Beverly Cleary, and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, by J.K. Rowling. They were presented at the assembly yesterday and are now in the classroom library for all to enjoy.
Everyone is working hard on their Wordly Wise books, and most have completed all of the work up to Lesson 5. We are currently working on Lesson 6. The vocabulary words are challenging, and the Hawaiian Stars are enjoying the variety of activities every day.
Our Writer's Workshop stories are being written with better clarity and more details. The students are editing with peers and making revisions almost daily. Soon they will select a story to publish.
Our math work has been fun. We have used play money to learn to make as many different combinations as possible that add up to $1.00. This has been an enjoyable experience, and the class has been working cooperatively in groups to create as many combinations as they can. We continue to do daily computation sheets for practice, and the CML problems have been especially challenging. As we prepare for our Math Adventure project presentations for October 10, we are practicing solving the sample problems with partners. Finding two different ways to solve each problem has been especially challenging and fun.
The Moon Over Manoa fundraiser donations have been pouring in. We should have 100% participation by this Friday. Many thanks to Ms. Chung for coordinating all of the donations for our class. It has been a monumental job!
My mom's funeral will be held this Saturday, so my family is slowly convening at my house. My son and his wife from Maui arrived last night with their children. My son from Okinawa arrived yesterday morning, and my sister and her family arrive this morning. We will be busy with family meetings and dinners every night until Monday. Some of them wiill return home on Tuesday. Many thanks to all the families who sent sympathy cards and memorial gifts. They are sincerely appreciated. My mom was a remarkable woman, and she had a full and happy life. She will be remembered by everyone because there is a street in Waikiki named after her, Kealohilani Avenue.
Our Hawaiian Studies continues to focus on volcanoes and earthquakes. Today we began using a special workbook of information to help us learn about these natural phenomena.
SC has donated a variety of books by Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary to the classroom library. Everyone can enjoy these special books.
Camp Erdman forms are due by this Friday. Many thanks to everyone who already turned them in. We have ten parents coming to chaperone from our class so we should have a very fun, safe, and exciting learning experience. Cabin assignments, dining hall table assignments, the schedule, and the packing list will be sent home next week. We are setting everything up at this time.
