The Hawaiian Stars have had a busy week trying to complete their Wordly Wise corrections and their Earthquakes and Volcanoes books. Most have done a great job and have done their corrections up to Lesson 8 or 9. A few have gone ahead to work on Lesson 11. The Earthquakes and Volcanoes books are completed, and their reports are also done. They have demonstrated a good understanding about earthquakes and volcanoes as a result of their reading of the information in the book. Their next topic of research will be the Northwest Hawaiian Islands, and they have begun reading their new booklets about them.
Our next project is due on October 31. These book reports should include a 2-minute speech and a very creative visual aid about the book. The Hawaiian Stars have been working on them for the past three weeks, so I expect to see and hear some great presentations. As usual, we will begin at 7:50 AM with the presentations. Parents and grandparents are invited to attend.
Writer's Workshop stories are being produced daily, and we have made good progress with our Halloween stories, creation legends, personal narratives, poems, and fiction stories. Many have been published and are ready to be shared with the class.
Our math work has been extremely successful with everyone doing a perfect job on the computation practice sheets every day (after corrections). The CML problems have been quite challenging, and the children have enjoyed working with a partner to share ideas and problem-solving strategies.
Our reading is progressing nicely, and many of the students are reading books in series because they like the work of certain authors. Their Reading Log entries continue to be detailed and creative as they articulate their understanding of what they have read.
Many of our Hawaiian Stars are running laps every morning and getting good physical exercise. They are recording their running in their PE folders so that they can calculate how far they have run. Because they are working with tenths of a mile, this is good math practice, too.
Please remember that Halloween costumes may be brought to school on October 31st, and the children may change to their costumes after lunch. There will be a costume parade, some entertainment, and snacks at the high school auditorium. No goodie bags should be sent in because the 'Ohana and other groups have prepared the snacks for the day.
My husband and I are off to Las Vegas tonight for a few days of R&R. We'll return on Monday night. Ms. Karyn Hermann will be my substitue while I am gone.
