Hawaiian Stars News 11-2-06

The Hawaiian Stars did a great job of preparing and presenting their book report projects on Tuesday. Eleven students received a 5-star evaluation, and seven received 4 stars. We had some very creative visual aids, and the speeches were all very well done. There is so much more confidence being displayed by the presenters. We had many dioramas, mobiles, and posters this time. Everyone used bright colors and the visual aids enhanced their speeches. We have been encouraged to read many interesting, exciting, and funny books by our presenters. Congratulations to everyone for all of their hard work and creativity!

The work on portfolios has begun, and the students are selecting pieces to show their growth as learners this semester. Their reflections describe their impressions of the skills they have learned and the concepts they have worked on. Many of the photos will be interesting to the readers of their portfolios.

Math work continues with everyone doing a great job and correctly completing the assignments. CML work is moving along nicely, and we are concentrating on our problem-solving skills. We are also working with measurement and have used rulers,
yardsticks, and measuring tapes to measure the length and width of our classroom. This was to confirm the measurements I took off the blueprints of our building because I needed that information for renewing our after-school program license.

The writers have done a good job on their projects, and many have completed their legends, personal narratives, and fiction stories. Everyone also wrote a Halloween story for fun and did a Halloween acrostic poem.

Our Wordly Wise work is moving along nicely with most students working on lesson 11 or higher. Half of the third graders have completed their first books and moved on to their second. They are enjoying the challenge of their new books. The fourth graders are also doing a good job with their corrections.

Our reading continues to improve with everyone sustaining their concentration and focus during our daily reading periods. The Reading Log entries continue to be detailed and accurately articulate the Hawaiian Stars' understanding of the books they have read. It is fun to read their entries because they are very candid with their comments.

Those who collected donations for UNICEF turned in their boxes yesterday, and Mrs. Jacobson is counting the money. A final total will be announced when all collections are turned in and counted. Many thanks to all who contributed to this worthy cause.

Our reservations for Kilauea Military Camp have been confirmed. You will receive a flyer announcing two parent meetings about the trip. Please attend one of the meetings if you are planning to go to the Big Island with us in March. The only time you can sign up for the trips will be at those meetings. The first one will be on Thursday, November 16, at 6:00 PM, and the second one will be on Wednesday, November 29, at 6:00 PM. I hope to see all of our parents at the meetings.

Many thanks to the Ohana and the groups that provided treats for our students at the Halloween Spooktivity celebration. Jeff Gere told a scary story, and the magician Ryan did a great job of entertaining the children. They all visited the haunted houses and received a trick or a treat. They also received bags of popcorn and a goodie bag. Their costumes were very creative, and everyone looked terrific!
