The Hawaiian Stars have been very busy this week. They enjoyed the HTY production of Sport yesterday at Tenney Theater. It was an upbeat play about different sports and the humor that can be found in them. Everyone had a favorite part of the play, and they were all different because different sports appealed to different students. I especially enjoyed the segment about skiing because I found myself in the same position as the actors every time I went skiing - face down in the snow, struggling to get back up. We discussed the importance of humor when we play sports, and everyone agreed that we need to see the funny side of every sport we play.
Our meeting about the Big Island trip which was scheduled for tonight has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date. Specific information about the new chaperone requirements will be discussed as well as the tentative itinerary and Kilauea Military Camp cabins, where we will stay overnight. Specific information about the bus, meals, and packing lists will come later. Thank you for your understanding.
The Hawaiian Stars are doing some great work preparing their personal portfolios for conferences. They are writing about what a good reader, writer, mathematician, and researcher do as they accomplish their tasks. I think you will find their lists quite interesting. We will continue to do more work to include in the portfolios for the next three weeks.
Our daily work is progressing nicely, and we have moved ahead in our Wordly Wise books. Most are on Lessons 13 and 14 now. The corrections have been done very thoroughly, and most are caught up at this time.
Our math work has included fractions, graphing, and geometry. We will focus on these areas for the next three weeks. All of the computation practice and CML sheets have been done quite efficiently. If your child doesn't have math homework, it's because the corrections have been done in class daily.
Our Writer's Workshop pieces have been interesting, and most have finished several poems as well as their stories and personal narratives. A few have published their stories, and we will all try to get one published by conference time.
Our reading work is really moving along. Everyone is reading a challenging book and writing about it in their Reading Log. The entries continue to be detailed and truly articulate the Hwaiian Stars' understanding of what they have read. The responses are especially creative.
Everyone was treated to a pizza lunch, and they truly enjoyed it yesterday. It was a welcome change from the regular lunch menu. Thanks to the Office of Institutional Advancement for the special treat. The mandarin oranges and juice were great accompaniments to the pizza.
Our next project is a Math Adventure that is due for presentation on Monday. Everyone has received approval of their Math Adventure planning sheets so they should be working on their posters and speeches. All parents and grandparents are invited to the presentations, which will begin at 7:50 AM.
We look forward to the Thanksgiving holidays next week and have thought about all the things we are thankful for this year. Our lists are very long!
