The Hawaiian Stars News 12-14-06

The Hawaiian Stars did a great job on their book report presentations on Monday. Most of the presenters received five stars, and some received four stars. That means everyone was well prepared and met or exceeded the requirements of the assignment. We are doing an excellent job of preparing for the presentations and the speeches are very detailed and well organized. The visual aids varied from dioramas to mobiles, games, and posters. All were done very thoroughly. The two most popular ones were the movie rolls. As we do more presentations, we are developing confidence and using our creativity in new ways. It is always a pleasure to be a part of the sharing because each student does a good job and grows in confidence. Bravo, Hawaiian Stars!

Our entries to the "Peace With Aloha" poster contest will be sent in tomorrow. Each Hawaiian Star created a poster that shows their interpretation of the theme. They used bright colors, fancy lettering, and local items in their pictures, and tried to do a beautiful piece of artwork. There are thousands of students who enter this contest and over the years, two Mid-Pacific Institute Elementary School students have had their posters selected for the calendar. We hope we have another winner among the posters we are submitting this year.

The class spent two days making Christmas cards for our soldiers who are serving in Iraq. Their messages of thanks and holiday cheer should be a nice treat for our soldiers. Many thanks to Mrs. Kim Soares who is coordinating this project.

After practicing for the Christmas program for several weeks, the children will perform twice this evening. The students have worked very hard, and the program is truly delightful. I'm sure everyone will enjoy what they see and hear. Because this is the first time we have ever presented two whole shows in the same evening, the children will be excited. Please check your child out with me after the 6:30 PM performance ends. Then gather bags and lunch boxes in Scudder Dining Hall and get some refreshments. (We will be by the green tables outside on the lanai between Scudder and Baaken Auditorium.)

The Hawaiian Stars have worked very hard, and they presented themselves very well at the conferences last week. You will receive the conference summaries and continua in the mail next week. All portfolios should be returned the first week of January 2007. Math Adventure planning sheets are also due the first week of January. Everyone received one yesterday.
I know that the holidays are always busy, but I hope you will encourage your child to work on Wordly Wise corrections and read daily.

My husband and I will be cleaning my mom's house to prepare it for sale, so we won't be going on any trips. However, our grandsons from Maui will be coming to visit for a week. I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday season. I wish everyone a Mele Kalikimaka and Hauoli Makahiki Hou!
