The Hawaiian Stars are working very diligently on their Wordly Wise books every day. We have been working with partners on our corrections, and many have made progress in that area. The new work continues to be done independently, and we have two students who have completed their books so far. Our goal is for everyone to finish their books before Spring Break.
Our Hawaiian Studies has focused on the Water Cycle and the Volcanoes of the Big Island as we begin to prepare for our trip. The class will be doing some inquiry research about the five main volcanoes in the weeks ahead.
The third graders are practicing their multiplication facts every day, and the fourth graders are working with larger number multiplication. We have begun to play a geometry game to help us with our vocabulary and understanding of the concepts in this area of math. Our CML work is moving along nicely, and the problem solving challenges are getting more difficult.
Our Writer's Workshop stories and poems have focused on our grandparents as we prepare for the Grandparents' Day celebration on February 28th. There will be a formal announcement of the program, and all grandparents will receive invitations to attend the celebration. We will share poems and stories with the grandparents in our classroom.
The Hawaiian Stars are challenging themselves by reading interesting books, and their Reading Log entries have been getting more detailed and thorough. The summaries have improved with more details, and the response choices have been very creative and well done.
The next projects will be book reports, which wii be due for presentation on February 5. We expect this group of presentations to be the best of the year so far!
Our Big Island trip itinerary and plans have almost all been confirmed, and you will be receiving a packet of information in about two weeks. It will include the packing list, flight assignments, rooming assignments, the final itinerary, and other pertinent information. I would like to thank everyone for your prompt replies and copies of your tuberculin test results. We are reviewing the chaperone information we have received, and will be sending home reminders to anyone who did not send in the required information by the January 8th deadline.
Our students are currently designing a t-shirt for the trip. The winning design will be printed on t-shirts for all travelers to the Big Island.
I will also be sending home a form so that our parents and students can order Zippy's Zip-Pacs for the trip. We are all required to bring lunch for the first day, so my husband and I will place the order and pick up the lunches for our class and Mrs. Holzman's class on March 1st. This is just a service we are offering since so many people seem to order these lunches for the trip. You will receive your pre-ordered lunches at the airport when you check in with me that morning.
