Hawaiian Stars News: February 1, 2007

The Hawaiian Stars are really enjoying playing the geometry bingo game, which is helping them to learn their geometry vocabulary. We have fun with it every day and then do our regular math work and CML problems. The problem solving strategies which the students are using will help them as they move on to more challenging problems. The third graders are doing a wonderful job with their multiplication matrix drill sheets every day, and the fourth graders are practicing working with larger numbers in multiplication and division. Almost everyone has been able to correct their work in class every day, too.

Our next projects are book reports which will be presented on Monday, February 5th. All Hawaiian Stars should be preparing their visual aids and speeches for this project. We are looking forward to seeing and hearing some very creative presentations.

On February 5th, we will also be going to see the HTY production of "The Thousand Cranes" at Tenney Theater. We will leave school on chartered buses at 8:45 AM and attend the 9:15 AM show. We wiill return to school at 10:35 AM. Because the story of Sadako is so famous, we will also be folding origami cranes to bring to Tenney Theater. They are trying to decorate the entire theater with folded origami cranes.

Our research about the five major volcanoes on the Big Island is moving along nicely, and we will begin setting up our groups for the research on the Big Island trip. Each student will have responsibility for gathering information, taking photos, and organizing a group Keynote slide show presentation when we return. Notebooks and cameras will be provided to each student.
We are currently making the final arrangements for trip t-shirts, ordering Zippy's zip-pac lunches, and confirming the rooming arrangements at Kilauea Military Camp. You will receive a packet of information next week with all the details. Order forms for t-shirts and zip-pacs will also be sent home. The flight lists and packing list will also be included in the trip packet.
The excitement about the trip is mounting, and the Hawaiian Stars are talking about it daily. Those who are going to the opera the night before will have an enriching experience to talk about, too.
