Hawaiian Stars News: February 15, 2007

The Hawaiian Stars are getting excited about the Big Island trip! Today In the white envelopes you will find many sheets of information about the trip. The most important one is the Transportation/Medical form, which must be completed and returned to me next week. The t-shirts have been ordered, and we would like to congratulate Sachi Clark and Justin Kaneko, whose designs will be screened on all the t-shirts. The vendor picked up the designs and t-shirt orders yesterday afternoon. We hope to have them back on the 24th, when we will distribute them to all of you. The other important information will be the packing list, rooming list, airline lists, and final itinerary.

Our class is doing a great job on their work every day, and their progress has been quite positive. The biggest challenge seems to be the Wordly Wise corrections and the test prep workbooks. The Writer's Workshop stories have been very interesting, and our math is moving along nicely. We have been discussing the Big Island volcanoes in small groups, and everyone already knows a lot about them. They will organize their groups for the Big Island research while we are on the trip next week and will write their guide questions together. Each group will be responsible for a stop on the itinerary, and everyone will be responsible for information about Kilauea. Cameras and notebooks will be sent home next week to be taken on the trip. Students will need to take their photos related to their research and give me their cameras at the Hilo airport before we board the planes, so that I can have the photos developed for them over the weekend when we return.

"Jump Rope for Heart" will be held this Friday from 12:30 to 2:00 PM at the gym. Everyone has been assigned to a mixed group of students from various grade levels, and a teacher is in charge of each group. My group is called The Wizards. It will be a fun afternoon of special demonstrations, rope-jumping routines, and helping younger students jump rope. Water and juice will be provided for everyone.

All Hawaiian Stars need to have their Math Adventure planning sheets approved on Friday, so that they can begin working on their speeches and posters.

We have several students who will be attending the opera on the night of the 28th. They need to be aware of the special arrangements for that excursion.
