The Hawaiian Stars gave a wonderful performance to the grandparents and parents in their classroom poetry presentation last week. The grandparents enjoyed eating lunch with the children, and some students shared their portfolios with them. Our room was filled with thirty grandparents and parents for the program. The celebration in the gym was enjoyed by all, and the Hawaiian Stars really had fun showing off their skills and musical compositions. Many thanks to Cindy Kaita and Nicole Chung, who provided special fruit trays to add to the sack lunches provided for the grandparents. It was a very special celebration that everyone enjoyed.
The Big Island trip lived up to our expectations. It was a fabulous learning experience and a truly fun time for all. We enjoyed the tours of the Pacific Tsunami Museum, Mokupapapa Museum, Akaka Falls, and Imiloa Astronomy Center. The children took lots of notes and are preparing their reports in class this week. Our stay at Kilauea Military Camp was comfortable, although it was quite cool when we arrived. Most cabins had fires lit in the fireplaces, and some groups even made s'mores. Many thanks to all of the chaperones, who made this a safe and exciting trip for the children!
The volcano museums and hiking trails provided some interesting activities on Friday, and everyone liked the variety of experiences. We have lots of photos which we will be sharing soon. The Hawaiian Stars remembered a lot of what they saw and learned on this trip, so I am pleased that it was a memorable learning experience!
Next week Thursday, March 15th, we will be going to the Bishop Museum from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. We need one parent chaperone to accompany us. Please call to let me know if you can help us. If not, my husband will serve as our class chaperone. We will be participating in several activities there, including the Kupuna Atoll "This is Your Life " program, Science in your Palm, and Explorers of Mauna Kea. Each Hawaiian Star must bring a home lunch and drink, which we will have at the museum when our tour concludes. Many thanks to student teacher Leah Correia for making the special arrangements for us.
Friday, March 16th, is Ho'olaule'a Day at Mid-Pacific Institute, and our Hawaiian Stars will attend in small groups to spend their scrip and have a good time. We need about five parent volunteers to help the students buy their lunches and play games. If you can help out from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM, please send me a note next week so I can see how much help we will have. All students should have purchased their scrip by March 9th for this special event. T-shirts are also being sold, and those orders are also due on March 9th. There will be no school lunches that day, so everyone needs to buy their lunch at the Ho'olaule'a. There will be many food booths, games, and special activities in which the students can participate. I'm sure everyone will have a good time.
