The Hawaiian Stars returned to school after Spring Break with many stories of special times spent with family during the vacation. Everyone eagerly got back to work. Most groups are finishing up their Imiloa Astronomy Center reports for the Big Island trip. A few groups are working on their special group reports about the place they selected to research. The Keynote program is fun for everyone, and the Hawaiian Stars are trying to incorporate many interesting visual effects into their slide shows. The fourth graders are teaching the third graders to use the program, and there has been a lot of good cooperation and guidance among the students.
Everyone is due to present their final book report of the year on Monday, April 9th. We are looking forward to some very exciting and creative visual aids and speeches.
We will be working on our portfolios to get them ready for our conferences next month. Each group will be working on test-taking skills until the fourth graders take the SAT during the last week of April. The third graders will finish their handwriting books this week and will need to turn them in for grading. We will continue with other test-taking activities for the remainder of the month.
Our next excursion will be on April 12th. We will be returning to the Bishop Museum for another set of activities about the groups which helped to establish the settlements on Oahu and the resources they brought with them.
Our daily work continues, and most have completed their Wordly Wise books already. Corrections will occupy their time in the next few weeks. Everyone is also writing sentences with the vocabulary words they learned this year. We are working on a different set of words every day.
Our math is progressing nicely, and we have almost finished our geometry unit. The geometry game has really helped everyone to learn and remember the very specific vocabulary. Our fraction and decimal units will finish out the year.
Writing projects continue to develop, and many stories are being published on the computers. Everyone should have a new published piece in their portfolio for this semester.
Our next fundraiser will begin on the 16th of April and continue till the 27th. This is the Pennies for Patients fundraiser, which benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Students are asked to bring in money to contribute to this effort. There is a contest to see which class raises the most money, and the winning class will be rewarded with a pizza party. We will also have a box-decorating contest. The prize for the winning class is also a pizza party. Please help to support this worthwhile fundraiser.
I apologize for not getting all the photos of the Big island trip onto our photo gallery. I will take care of it within the week.
