Hawaiian Stars News: May 3, 2007

The Hawaiian Stars did an outstanding job on their final Math Adventure presentations this Monday. Almost everyone received four or five stars. Only one project received three stars. The speeches were delivered confidently, and the posters were so creative and well done. Brenton surprised us with a whole bake shop full of the items he said he would sell for his problem fundraiser. Everyone received samples of all of his delicious baked goods. (Teachers ate the leftovers!) The third graders will have another year of Math Adventures, but the fourth graders will be doing other math projects in fifth grade.

Our lei-making session this morning should be interesting and exciting. It is a nice skill for the Hawaiian Stars to learn, and we will be creating leis to give away at the May Day program. Many thanks to Mrs. Denise Hirano for letting us borrow her beautiful baskets to place the leis in for the program.

The children all brought their May Day clothes to the classroom, and I'm sure they will have no trouble dressing themselves tomorrow. I will help the boys with their sashes, which Mrs. Koshi provided. The girls will help each other with putting up their hair and pinning on plumeria adornments. They will be wearing rosettes which they will create today.

If you would like to take your child home after the program, please come to the classroom to pick your child up and check out with me. We won't be bringing any bags to the gym with us.

Our portfolio work is progressing nicely, and we are also doing a good job on finishing up the Keynote slide shows. Because of the many interruptions for May Day rehearsals, our work time has suffered a little, but we're doing fine.

The sharing of the Keynote slide shows will take place next Friday, May 11, beginning at 8:15 AM. Mrs. Hussey asked me to move the time so we don't interfere with preschool drop-offs. You may park in the fire lane that morning. She will help me with arrangements for this special parking area because we need to go through the maintenance department and security. I hope to see most of you here! If you miss it, your child can show you the slide show created by his/her group at conferences.

I am looking forward to celebrating all that the children have accomplished this year at our conferences. Everyone has worked very hard and grown in many ways. I am very proud of all of the Hawaiian Stars!
