Hawaiian Stars News: May 10, 2007

The Hawaiian Stars have been working hard on their Keynote slide shows so they can share them with parents on Friday, May 11, at 8:15 AM in the classroom. Mrs. Hussey has made arrangements for the parents to park in the fire lane behind our classroom for this project sharing. We have been making final additions to the slide shows, and most of them are very creative. A few students still need to import more photos, but the majority of the shows are completed. Mr. Yoshinaga has been teaching the Hawaiian Stars to manage their slide shows and prepare them for sharing. I think the whole show will last about 90 minutes. You may also have your child share it at conference time.

Portfolios have been our focus for the past week. We have made some selections of work samples and reflected on the kind of evidence they show about us as learners. Most students have completed their Wordly Wise sentences and corrections, but a few still need to get the corrections done. All workbooks should now be completely corrected for all Hawaiian Stars.

Our final Math Adventures are posted on the walls of the classroom, and they are quite impressive. Many parents who pick their children up from after-school care have taken the time to read the posters, and they enjoyed the variety of work done by the students.

Everyone is trying to complete their final story for Writer's Workshop, and there has been a flurry of activity during our writing time. We are working on clarity and descriptive language to make the stories more interesting and exciting.

Math continues to be challenging as we concentrate on CML problems to help us with complex story problem-solving. Fractions and decimals occupy the rest of our time.

Reading has been enjoyable as most of the Hawaiian Stars are reading challenging books, which they find more interesting. Reading Log entries have been detailed and articulate the students' reading comprehension very well.

Miss Brooks has scheduled a make-up class for art since we missed the class on May Day and we'll also miss the class next Friday for conference preparations. That class will be on Wednesday, May 16, from 8:30 - 9:15 AM. We would like to thank her for providing the class with extra time to finish their artwork.
