Hawaiian Stars News: May 17, 2007

The Hawaiian Stars did an outstanding job of sharing their Keynote slide shows last Friday. The Big Island trip highlights were enjoyed by everyone in attendance. It was nice to have fifteen parents and one grandparent see their slide shows. Of course, the parents who missed it will see it at the conferences next week. Because the Hawaiian Stars wanted to take advantage of as many special effects as possible, the slide shows became quite elaborate in their presentation. The three groups who included music tried very hard to have the music enhance the slide shows, but because they were using GarageBand music, some of the music wasn't as effective as they would have liked.

Our Hawaiian Stars were treated to strawberries, grapes, and raisins after the slide show presentations. Many thanks to Mrs. Nicole Chung who provided the delicious and healthy treats.

The work on portfolios continues as everyone tries to select and reflect on various pieces of evidence which showcase their progress during the second semester. We should have it done in time for the conferences. The few who don't finish will continue to work on it after the conferences.

We will have a pizza party for our end-of-the-year celebration on Tuesday, May 29, at 12:00 PM. Mrs. Cindy Kaita and Mrs. Nicole Chung have organized a lunch of pizza, fruits, and drinks for the Hawaiian Stars. Many thanks to these hard-working room mothers. We will also be presenting our Mahalo Awards for this year at our party.

On May 30, we will be celebrating Flying Up Day, which will give our students the opportunity to see what next year will be like. The fourth graders will spend some time in Mrs. Matsumoto's classroom to learn what the fifth grade is all about. Our third graders will spend some time with Mrs. Revard's second graders so we can find out what the next multiage 3/4 classes will be doing. This is a fun day for all, and we will witness the leave-taking ceremony for the fifth graders as they move up to sixth grade.

Thursday, May 31, will be a day at the beach to end the school year. We will go to Magic Island on chartered buses for this fun day. The 'Ohana will provide lunches and drinks. Please make sure your child applies lots of sunscreen that morning because it will be very hot out there.

To facilitate the cleaning out of cubbyholes on the 29th and 30th, please send your child to school with two shopping bags for their personal belongings and school supplies. It will make it easier for all if the shopping bags are sturdy and can carry lots of things in them.

The teachers will have an all-day meeting on June 1 to wrap up the year, and the following week we will be having workshops every day with the specialist from Math Investigations. She will be teaching us how to make the best use of this new series of resource materials for math instruction.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the conferences. We have lots to celebrate!
