3/4-F News for September 21, 2007

The Manoa Mountains have been working hard to get their Math Adventure planning sheets approved so they can begin working on their projects. Most have received approval and can now be creative with their speeches and posters. We look forward to some outstanding presentations on Monday, October 1, at 10:00 AM. Of course, parents and grandparents are welcome to attend the presentations. Parking will be available in the circle in front of Wilcox Hall.

Math work is progressing nicely with Unit 2 of the Investigations series. Working with data collection and constructing and interpreting graphs have been fun for the third graders. Story problems and computation review continue to challenge their problem-solving skills.

Writer's Workshop is very active, and the Manoa Mountains have all written "seed stories," memory pieces, and poems.  Many have shared their work and have received positive feedback this week. Concentrating on writing for clarity with lots of good descriptions has been the focus of writing activities this month.

I am still reading a Hawaiian legend aloud every day from Monday through Thursday. The students are working with Hawaiian legends for their Literature Circles as well. The comprehension activities have been well done, and the Manoa Mountains enjoy discussing the legends together. Vocabulary work continues twice a week. The Manoa Mountains have done a good job of writing the word meanings, original sentences with the words, and drawing pictures to show what the words mean.

Reading Log entries are getting better and better as the students try to include specific details to demonstrate their understanding of what they have read. The content of their writing is improving as they put more effort into completing the assignments. I am enjoying reading their entries.

The Moon Over Manoa fundraiser is coming up soon. All donations should be in by today. If we have 100% participation by our families, the class will have a pizza party. I urge every family to make a donation to this worthwhile cause.

The Nike Fun Run will be held on Saturday. We have several students from our class signed up to participate. I'm sure it will be fun for everyone.

My astigmatism and cataract surgery went well on Tuesday morning, and I now have 20/20 vision in my right eye.  I will be wearing sunglasses for a month to keep my eyes protected, and then I'll have new eyeglasses made, since my left eye is still 20/30. It is a remarkable difference for me.  Everything is brighter, clearer, and wonderful!

The class made beautiful get-well letters for Mr. Louie this past week.  He should be returning to school soon, and we will schedule some excursions in the weeks ahead.
