Manoa Mountains News for December 6, 2007

The Manoa Mountains are very busy preparing their portfolios for conferences and selecting work samples to share with you. They are writing their reflections and placing their work in their personal portfolios.

The next big project is the book reports that will be presented on Monday, December 10, beginning at 10:00 AM, in our classroom.  Of course, parents and grandparents are invited to come and enjoy them.  Everyone is busy memorizing a speech and completing a visual aid. Guests may park in the Wilcox Circle area, although there may be very few spaces because the special Christmas Chapel program will be presented that morning at 9:00 AM in the dining hall. This change was made because of the weather conditions, which made so many students miss school and rehearsals.

The date for our class pizza lunch has also been changed. We found out that the Advancement Office will be providing a pizza lunch on December 12th for the entire elementary school as a thank-you for the success of "Moon Over Manoa." Our class pizza lunch has been moved to December 19th, the day of the Christmas Program. I'm sure the Manoa Mountains will be very happy with this change. Many thanks to Nicole Chung and Cindy Kaita for this special treat!

This class will spend the rest of our work time getting ready for conferences. Our Language Arts activities have focused on antonym pairs, and the students have done a great job on their worksheets and sentences. The Literature Circle work has focused on legends of Kauai, and the vocabulary work has been about words we learned in our Literature Circle stories. Our Writer's Workshop stories and poems have been about Christmas experiences, and we will continue with that theme for the rest of this year. Our Reading Log entries continue to be detailed and well done. Math classes are winding up Unit 3 and should have all their corrections done before we go on Christmas Break.

The specials classes have been doing work for the portfolios, and we should soon have completed portfolios to share at the conferences. The teachers will be working on conference preparations this Friday. We should have some interesting conference next Thursday and Friday. Please remember to bring your children to the conferences at your scheduled times because they usually conduct the conferences.

The information about costuming for the Christmas Program was sent home in last week's packet. Please check the requirements and have your child wear the required attire. We will ask everyone to be in the classroom at 5:15 PM on December 19 so we can be ready at 5:30 in Scudder Dining Hall for the warm-up before the show. The students will perform at 6:00 PM. You may pick them up after the show at the designated areas for each class. The students will know where their class needs to wait for you to pick them up.

The canned food collection to help the homeless will be ending on December 18, so please have your child bring some canned food to share with families who are less fortunate and need help. The monthly collections have been very generous so far. Many thanks to all the families who have contributed.
