Manoa Mountaina News for May 15, 2008

The Manoa Mountains had their end-of -the-year party with pizza, fruits, chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies, and drinks provided by our room mothers, Nicole Chung and Cindy Kaita. Everyone ate a delicious meal and really enjoyed the food. Many thanks to our room mothers for this special treat.

Our next projects will be the final Math Adventures for this year. The sharing will begin on Monday, May 19th, at 10:00 AM in our classroom. Parents and grandparents may park at the Wilcox Circle area for this presentation. We are looking forward to some outstanding visual aids for this sharing.

Our preparations for conferences have been worked on this week and we will finish them next week. All groups will have their slide shows ready to share at the conferences. Your child will show you the slide show that his/her group worked on together. We will share all the slide shows on Tuesday, May 27th, at 10:45 AM in our classroom.

Our next week will be very busy with conferences on Thursday and Friday, a holiday on Monday for Memorial Day, and several special events. On Wednesday we will have "Flying Up Day" which is an opportunity to see what the next grade is like and to experience an activity with one of the teachers. Our class will host Mrs. LeBlanc's second graders, and our fourth graders will go to Mrs. Hoddick. Our third graders will help to welcome the new students and tell them about what it's like in third grade. We will also have the fifth-grade Leavetaking Ceremony at 10:00 AM.

On Thursday we will have a field day to celebrate the last day of school for this year. Unfortunately, I will not be here for the fun because I have a circuit court probate trial to settle my mother's estate that morning. It has been a two-year battle with my brother, and I am hoping for a judgment in my favor.

It has been a great year working with the Manoa Mountains, and I'm sure everyone is ready to move on to the next grade. I am looking forward to my retirement, which begins on June 1. I will have more time for family, trips, and some housecleaning and relaxing. After 41 years of teaching, it looks like an enjoyable future for me. Many thanks to all of you for making my years at Epiphany and Mid-Pacific so wonderful!

Manoa Mountains News for May 8, 2008

The Manoa Mountains have been working very hard to prepare for the opera performances on Friday and Saturday evenings. They have had many rehearsals and feel confident that they know their parts. Their t-shirts and capes were delivered yesterday so their costumes are also ready. Everyone will change to their costumes at 5:00 PM on both evenings and they may keep their capes and t-shirts after the Saturday performance. The opera committee worked very hard to get the costumes prepared on time so we are very grateful to them for their hard work. Students need to be at school at 5:00 PM both days to get ready for the opera. Meet at the classroom to change to costumes. We will walk down to Scudder Dining Hall together. You may pick your child up at Scudder after both performances. Please let me know when you are ready to leave that you are taking your child with you on both nights. Only choir students will check out with Mrs. Koshi because they have different instructions for the performances.

The room mothers for our class, Mrs. Cindy Kaita and Mrs. Nicole Chung, will be treating the class to a pizza lunch with fruits and drinks on Wednesday, May 14th. This is for our end-of-the-year party to celebrate a great year together. Many thanks to them for organizing this special treat.

Our daily work has focused on preparing the portfolios for the conferences, and many work samples have been selected to show how we have grown as learners in the second semester. Reflections explain our strengths and ways we have improved in the different areas of the curriculum.

Our final projects will be the math adventures which will be shared on May 19th at 10:00 AM. Of course, all parents and grandparents are invited to join us for this final sharing of individual projects. We hope to have the excursion slide shows ready during the last week of school. Parents will get a preview of each child's group work at the conferences.

If you can help out on the field day on May 29th, please contact Mrs. Jenkins to volunteer. Unfortunately, I will not be here on that day because I have an appointment in circuit court on a probate matter concerning my mother's will and trust.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the final conferences. We have much to celebrate with each student and can be proud of the work that has been accomplished.

Manoa Mountains News for April 24, 2008

The Manoa Mountains did a great job on their book report presentations on Monday and Tuesday. Most of the presenters earned five stars for their creativity and thoroughness. We had a wide variety of visual aids: posters, games, mobiles, models, dioramas, dressed-up characters, and a SmartBoard presentation. Everyone did a thorough job of preparing for this project, and they shared their best work for this final book report. Congratulations!

We would like to thank Dr. Lynn Yanagihara and Mrs. Kathie Yamashiro for serving as our chaperones on the two days of excursions. Dr. Yanagihara came on Thirsday, and Mrs. Yamashiro came on Thursday and Friday. We all took lots of photos, which are posted on our website. Dr. Ogino from Ms. Holzman's class also shared his photos with us. Please view them to see what a fun learning experience everyone had! The Manoa Mountains are currently working on their slide shows of the two field trips. Many thanks to the parents who had their child's photos developed because they missed the deadline for having me take them to be developed.

Our students wrote thank-you letters to Mr. John Clark, who was our guide for our day in Manoa. He was very happy to receive them.

Everyone is busy with the SAT tests this week, and the fourth graders seem to be doing a very good job. The third graders are continuing to do practice tests and work in their D'Nealian Handwriting books.

Next week I will be out on Tuesday for a probate hearing at Circuit Court for my mother's estate. I will also be out on Thursday and Friday because I need to go to Maui for my son Wade's wedding. Mr. Dave Porter will be my substitute. He is an old friend from our days at Epiphany School.

On Thursday, May 1, we will celebrate Kite Day at Mid-Pacific Institute. The entire school will be out on the football field flying kites throughout the day. The students will all make their own kites on April 29th, practice flying them for a day, and join everyone else for Kite Day. Thanks to Mr. Bruce Black and his committee for preparing the kite kits for our students. The sled kites are easy to make, fly, and enjoy. Everyone should have lots of fun!

Today Mr. Peter Kaneshige came to do a demonstration about solar energy. The Manoa Mountains were very interested and learned a lot about how to conserve energy. We invited Ms. Holzman's class to join us for this informative and interesting presentation. Mahalo, Mr. Kaneshige, for sharing your expertise with us.

"Kahalaopuna" is the featured subject of our music, writing, and research this week. We are preparing the mini-biographies of all the featured singers and interviewed the high school students who sing the various solos in the opera. Our work on the Program Committee has kept us busy!

The Pennies for Patients fundraiser for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society ends this Friday. It's not too late to make a contribution to this worthy cause, which helps children with cancer. We have two boxes filled with coins so far and we hope to collect even more!

Manoa Mountains News for April 17, 2008

The Manoa Mountains would like to thank Mr. John Clark for taking them on an exciting and interesting tour of the Manoa ahupua'a, with stops at the Manoa Chinese Cemetery, Koganji Temple, the lo'i at the UH Hawaiian Studies site, Waikiki Beach, and the catamaran ride. We had a fun-filled day and learned a lot! Mr. Clark's expertise is appreciated by the Manoa Mountains because he taught them so many facts about Manoa Valley. They will be working on their slide shows about what they learned.

The Polynesian Cultural Center was a fascinating place to visit. The Manoa Mountains learned a lot about Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji, and Aotearoa. They played games and musical instruments, got tattoos, and watched the Pageant of Canoes. It was a culturally enriching experience.

The class would like to thank Mr. Peter Kaneshige for donating 15 pounds of ahi poke for our luau last Friday evening. It made the dinner complete! Mahalo, Mr, Kaneshige, for your thoughtfulness and generosity!

Our next project is due on Monday. It is a book report with a two-minute speech and a visual aid about the book. We are looking forward to some very creative presentations! Parents are invited to join us, and grandparents may also come for the project presentations! Everyone may park in Wilcox Circle for the 10:00 AM presentations.

We will be doing SAT testing all next week, so it is extremely important for the Manoa Mountains to be adequately prepared every day. The fourth graders will be taking the abbreviated-battery multiple-choice tests in reading comprehension, spelling, language usage, vocabulary, and mathematics problem-solving and procedures. They will also be taking the open-ended tests in reading, writing, and mathematics. The open-ended tests focus on the processes for reading, writing, and problem-solving. Students will be evaluated on a standard set of performance criteria. For example, students will have 50 minutes to write on a given topic. In mathematics, students will have 50 minutes to work on ten word problems which incorporate the national mathematics standards. For reading, students read a text and respond in writing to several questions of increasing complexity, from stating the main idea to making inferences. The tests are norm-referenced standardized tests, which means that your child's score is compared with the scores of thousands of other students in the same grade who took the SAT at the same time of the year across the nation. We usually receive the results in the summer. We will send home the test results, along with information on how to interpret the scores.

You can help your child be ready for test-taking in the following ways:

* Make sure your child gets to bed at a reasonable time.

* Provide a good healthy breakfast and snack.

* Get your child to school by 7:30 AM so he/she has time to settle in.

* AVOID asking every day, "So, how'd you do? " "Was it hard?" "Did you finish everything?" Your child will not really know. When you ask these questions, you want some reassurances. Instead, your questioning will cause unnecessary stress on you AND your child.

* Your child has already been working on test-prep materials in school and is well prepared to take this test. Making your child do more test-prep booklets and worksheets at this point will only stress them out,

* Remember that this is supposed to be fun.

* Assure your child that you love them and are proud of them regardless of the results.

The Manoa Mountains third graders will work on test-prep materials with me while the fourth graders take the test with Mrs. Holzman.

Yesterday we celebrated SC's birthday with a lunch of pizza, fruits, and drinks. Many thanks to Mrs. Chung and SC for this special treat!

Manoa Mountains News for March 13, 2008

The Manoa Mountains would like to thank SC and CK for bringing Valentine's Day treats for the class. It was nice to share such delicious strawberry mochi and cookies.

The Manoa Mountains are all trying to get their Math Adventures prepared before they go on Spring Break. All of the planning sheets have been approved, so I'm looking forward to some interesting and creative projects on March 31. We will begin our sharing at 10:00 AM that morning. All parents and grandparents are invited to attend. Parking is available in Wilcox Circle.

Everyone is excited about Ho'olaule'a, and we are thankful to our parents who have volunteered to be chaperones. We have six parents who will help our students around the Ho'olaule'a. It is highly recommended that the students bring a plastic bag to hold their prizes in as they walk around. Sometimes the prizes are heavy and the children have difficulty carrying everything without a bag. We will leave the classroom for the Ho'olaule'a at 11:30 AM, right after Art class, so all chaperones can meet us in the classroom at that time. We will try to be back at the classroom around 1:15 PM. If you would like to take your child home at that time, please check out with me first.

The Manoa Mountains have been working very hard and have accomplished a lot. Their writing pieces are being published daily, and their Literature Circle and Vocabulary work have been well done. The Language arts activities have given them a lot of practice with homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms as well as with parts of speech. They have done several word find puzzles and have enjoyed them.

Math continues to challenge everyone, and the third graders are reading and interpreting data from graphs to do their work now. Our test prep sessions have been very productive, and the fourth graders have finished their first workbook already.

Entries for the Art Contest for Kahalaopuna were due yesterday, and about half of the class turned in their entries. T-shirt designs were also due yesterday, and most took them home to finish for homework on Tuesday. All the ones that were turned in have been submitted for judging. Winners will be announced after Spring Break.

I hope that everyone has a restful and enjoyable vacation for Spring Break!

Manoa Mountains News for March 6, 2008

The Manoa Mountains have done a great job on their reflections about their book reports for their portfolios. The reports that they wrote describe the process for creating their visual aid and speech and explain why the book was important to share. Most of the projects received 4 or 5 stars, so they were very highly respected and enjoyed.

The Ho'olaule'a will be held on Friday, March 14, from 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM for the elementary school students. Everyone will buy their lunches at the Ho'olaule'a and then play games or buy things. We still need more parent volunteers to help chaperone our students as they walk around the high school campus. Please send me a note if you can help us out. All orders for scrip and t-shirts should be sent to the office by tomorrow.

Our regular work continues, and we are having fun with the test prep and D'Nealian handwriting work. Our third graders are doing a good job of keeping up with their corrections and have been making good progress. Although they will not take the SAT with the fourth graders in April, they are enjoying the practice.

The Math Adventure planning sheets have been approved for all but one student. Everyone should try to get the posters done before the Spring Break begins. On Monday, March 31, the Manoa Miuntains will present their projects beginning at 10:00 AM in our classroom. Of course, all parents and grandparents are invited to come and share in the presentations.

The Spring Break will be a nice vacation for all of us. My husband and I are going to Las Vegas for some R&R. We will meet my sister and her husband and visit our granddaughter Kristi, who now lives there. My husband's sister and her husband also live there. His oldest sister just died in December, so we will see her husband for the first time since she passed on. We're having a family dinner for this purpose at her favorite Chinese restaurant.

Many of the children have been talking about going on trips during the break, so I am encouraging them to get their projects done before they leave.

I have been very pleased with their Literature Circle work this past week because everyone did a good job of reading and discussing the story, answering the comprehension questions, and drawing a plot picture chart. Their reports are detailed and accurate.

Many stories have been published this week, and we should soon have at least one published story from every member of the class. They have been taking turns on the computers. I applaud their patience and respect for others.

Our math work continues to challenge us. The third graders are really getting to know their multiplication facts quite well. By playing the arrays game, they have been practicing their basic multiplication facts every day.

Our inquiry work into the history of Manoa during the last 100 years has raised many questions, and their discussions have been good collaborative efforts to familiarize themselves with the natural resources which were available and how the residents shared them. On April 10 and 11, we will go on two excursions to help us with our study of Manoa.

Manoa Mountains News for February 28, 2008

The Manoa Mountains did a great job on their book report presentations. Their speeches were detailed, and the visual aids were very creative. The majority received four or five stars for their evaluations. We had some outstanding posters, a game, some dioramas, and a mobile. Everyone did a confident presentation.

We are gearing up for the art contest, open to all of our students, related to the opera "Kahalaopuna." It is an opportunity to be creative and submit a piece of art work in any medium which could be incorporated into the final program for the opera. We will be performing the opera in May; this art contest is to raise interest in it.

We will also have a t-shirt design contest for our Manoa Day on April 11. We will be spending the entire day visiting historical sites in Manoa Valley and learning about the history of the valley. Our guest speaker will be Mr. John Clark (Sachi's dad), who is writing a book about Manoa Valley. We will also tour Waikiki because it is part of the Manoa ahupua'a and part of our studies. We will end with a family dinner of Hawaiian food in the dining hall around 5:30 PM. Information and sign-ups will be sent home tomorrow.

Our regular work continues to challenge us, and we are doing a good job on the Literature Circle legends. Reading and discussing the stories in groups, answering the comprehension questions, drawing a plot picture chart, and writing a report of the story have given everyone many opportunities for success in articulating their understanding of what they have read. Our vocabulary work has helped us to learn the meanings of new words in the legends.

Our creative writing is producing some nice published stories for the authors to share. We hope to have everyone publish a story before we go on spring break. With only six computers on the classroom, we patiently wait our turn as others complete their stories.

Our math has been fun with the math multiplication games that the third graders have been playing. They will be creating practice flash cards to help them learn the more difficult facts. We hope to have everyone learn all the multiplication facts this year.

Our inquiry research about Manoa Valley has everyone working in groups to discuss their impressions of how the valley looked 100 years ago. The groups are creating posters to share their ideas. The concept of the ahupua'a and how the Hawaiians shared their natural resources has been interesting to learn since the Manoa ahupua'a extends from the valley to Waikiki.

The annual Ho'olaule'a will be held on March 14. Our class will need at least six volunteer parents to take our students around the Ho'olaule'a. Each student will purchase lunch, play games, and have a fun time. To make it safe, we need the parents to take small groups around the high school campus for all the festivities. We will begin at 11:00 AM and end at 1:30 PM. If you are able to come and help us supervise our students, please send me a note next week. In today's Thursday packet, you will receive information about Ho'olaule'a and an order form for purchasing scrip and t-shirts. I hope many of you can join us.

Manoa Mountains News for February 21, 2008

The Manoa Mountains would like to thank all of the families who sent in Valentine's Day treats last week and/or supported the "Jump Rope for Heart" fundraiser for the American Heart Association. The students received their jump ropes and stickers yesterday for their participation in the event. They should still be practicing their jump rope skills daily since that is their PE unit for now.

Plans for the opera are taking shape, and our class will be designing the official program with Mrs. Lorenzana's class. They have been learning the story and songs for the opera in music class with Mrs. Koshi.

We have also been discussing our impressions of how Manoa valley looked one hundred years ago and how the Hawaiians lived here. We will be going on a field trip to Manoa Falls and Waikiki in April to continue our studies. Mr. John Clark (SC's dad) will help us plan our tour and provide leadership on this educational journey.

The book report projects are due for presentation on Monday, and we will begin at 10:00 AM in our classroom. Guests may park in Wilcox Circle for the presentations. We hope to see many parents and grandparents join us for this project sharing.

Our Literature Circle work is getting better and better. The Manoa Mountains are answering the comprehension questions with greater clarity and have drawn detailed plot pictures of the stories. Their reports indicate that they have a good understanding of what they have read. Their vocabulary work is also well done. They learn fifteen new words every week, and many are using the words in their stories for Writer's Workshop.

We have published some stories for Writer's Workshop and will be sharing them from the Author's Chair next week. Everyone is trying to get one story published this month. The stories are then made into books with special designs and illustrations on the cover.

Our daily reading continues to challenge us with interesting books, and many are doing a very nice job on their Reading Log entries. Their summaries and response choices are more detailed and express their understanding of what they have read. It is fun for me to read their entries every week, and I appreciate the care that goes into every
report.

Our math continues to challenge us every day. The third graders are working with multiplication, and the fourth graders are doing lots of problem solving. Everyone is doing a good job of keeping up with corrections. Soon we will send the Unit 4 work home.

We are working hard on our test-preparation books and have become accustomed to the multiple choice format. We are making good choices for our answers and carefully coloring in the circles for our selected answers. The third graders are also working on their D'Nealian Handwriting books and learning to write in cursive.

Our Language Arts lessons have helped us to learn about nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions. We will continue to expand our knowledge of the parts of speech and their proper usage.

Manoa Mountains News for February 14, 2008

Happy Valentine's Day! The Manoa Mountains have been very busy working hard in class. They have done a great job on their Literature Circle work this week and enjoyed reading and discussing the legends from Kauai. They have answered the comprehension questions and drawn their plot pictures to demonstrate their good understanding of the stories. Their reports indicate that they are able to articulate their understanding with clarity. It is nice to see the third and fourth graders working together on these assignments.

The vocabulary lists for this week have also been well done with word meanings stated clearly, sentences written with details, and pictures drawn with sufficient detail to make them meaningful. Our language arts work has concentrated on adverbs, adjectives, and prepositions this week, and it has been challenging for most of the class.

Our math continues to challenge us with problems about perimeters of polygons and areas of polygons with more than four sides. Triangles and quadrilaterals were fun to work with, and we did several exercises using combinations of as many as twelve figures to create new images.

Our daily reading is fun, and most are reading several chapters in class. The Reading Log entries include more specific details, and some of the responses are very creative. Everyone is doing a very good job of stating their understanding of what they have read daily.

Our writing is enjoyable, and everyone has been writing poems and personal narratives this week. We will continue to publish our favorite stories as time permits. Because it takes about two weeks to publish a story, the Manoa Mountains are taking turns using the computers for this task.

Our next project which is due for presentation is the book report for February 25th. We will begin at 10:00 AM and invite all parents and grandparents to attend. The children love to have an audience for their presentations.

"Jump Rope for Heart" will be held tomorrow afternoon from 12:30 - 2:00 PM at the gym. Many thanks to everyone for sending in the permission slips on time and making such generous donations. I'm sure we will all enjoy this special activity. Many of the students are honoring their grandparents by jumping rope for them.

Manoa Mountains News for February 7, 2008

The Manoa Mountains have been very busy with their regular classwork every day. Their Literature Circle work has included some legends about Kauai, and their vocabulary work has enabled them to learn the meanings of twenty new words this week. Their Writer's Workshop pieces are being edited by their peers. Six at a time are being published on the computers. There has been lots of activity during writing time!

Our math lessons have been challenging and fun. The third graders are working with perimeters, angles, and areas. Their polygon-building kits, made of different lengths of straws which the children will cut up, will enable them to create various sizes and types of polygons. We will also compare different types of triangles and quadrilaterals.

Test-taking preparations have involved the use of workbooks to familiarize the students with test-taking questions and a multiple choice format. They are doing a good job on their work. The third graders are also working on their D'Nealian Handwriting books to practice cursive writing.

Reading Log entries are getting better and better with more details and information about the characters. The clarity of the writing has improved, as everyone has taken the time to do a thorough job on the summaries and responses. Drawings are becoming more detailed, too.

Now that everyone has brought their earphones to school, their Garageband compositions for music class are really taking off. They are learning to do some complex music composition.

Today we had the pleasure of celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Rat with a Chinese lion dance. The students all gave the lion a red envelope filled with four quarters as an offering so that they would receive good luck for the coming year.

The next project which is due for presentation is the book report, which everyone should be working on. The presentations will be on Monday, February 25, in our classroom beginning at 10:00 AM. We are hoping that many parents and grandparents will be able to join us for this sharing of projects.

Please turn in the "Jump Rope for Heart" permission forms and donation envelopes as soon as possible. The event will be held next Friday in the gym and should be lots of fun for everyone! We still need volunteers to help out at the event. We will be at the gym from 12:30 - 2:00 PM.

Manoa Mountains News for January 31, 2008

The Manoa Mountains have been very busy with their writing projects, and some are publishing their work on the computers. It will be nice to share the completed stories with the class. Most have selected a creative story to publish at this time.

Everyone should be working on their next book report project, which will be due for presentation on Monday, February 25, at 10:00 AM. We are looking forward to some creative visual aids and speeches. The Reading Log entries have become more detailed, so there is lots of information to choose from to prepare these projects.

Our math work is progressing nicely, and the fourth graders have brought home their Unit 3 work. The third graders will bring their Unit 3 work home next week after all their corrections are completed. They are enjoying working with perimeter, angles, and area. Yesterday they created a seven-square-unit figure with squares and two different sizes of triangles. They are continuing to solve story problems to challenge their thinking.

The "Jump Rope for Heart" permission forms are due soon, so I would appreciate it very much if everyone can turn it in early. We need lots of parent volunteers to help for this event, too.

Everyone is doing a great job on their Literature Circle and vocabulary work every day. The stories for Literature Circle have been challenging in content, as we have worked with longer legends about Kauai. The vocabulary words come from the stories and help everyone to learn their meanings.

We are entering a poetry contest sponsored by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth and Starbucks, so everyone has written their thoughts about maintaining a healthy diet. They have been discussing ways to be healthy in PE class, so their ideas are very important to them.

Now that we have begun test preparations, the third graders are working on their Test Achiever books and D'Nealian handwriting books every week. The fourth graders will use their Test Achiever books and Scoring Higher to help them prepare for the SAT tests in April.

Manoa Mountains News for January 24, 2008

The Manoa Mountains enjoyed the basketball game against Maryknoll on Tuesday. Everyone was especially excited to cheer our team on because some of the players had come to our campus at lunchtime and met with our students; they even played some basketball with them. The students were selected in groups of five to play against the high schoolers and had a wonderful time. The game at 5:00 PM was very well attended, and the students and parents showed a lot of spirit. Many thanks to Mr. Wilfred Tochiki, who provided crowns for everyone to wear and balloons for everyone to use as they cheered the team on. The Extended Day supervisors and some volunteer teachers supervised the students during their pizza snack and the game. Many thanks to everyone for signing their children out with the supervisors.

The Manoa Mountains are working very hard on their stories and poems for Writer's Workshop. They will be publishing their work on the computers in the weeks ahead. The editing process takes some time, and we are all making revisions to our work to make it the best that it can be. Reports about the HTY play entitled "Maui vs. Hercules" were detailed and well written. The play was enjoyed by everyone, and the humor was particularly appreciated.

Math work continues with the third and fourth graders finishing up their corrections on Unit 3 work and moving on to the next unit. The third graders are having fun exploring perimeters, angles, and area. When all the Unit 3 corrections have been completed, the work will be sent home.

Today we had the pleasure of hearing James Rumford read his book Kahalaopuna at our assembly. It is the story being used for the opera that the whole school will be performing in May. It was very interesting and enjoyable.

We also honored Mr. Samuel Haga, who is the oldest living alumnus of MPI. He celebrated his 106th birthday this year! Our class made birthday cards for him, and we presented them at the assembly.

Our next project is a book report, which is due for presentation on Monday, February 25, at 10:00 AM in the classroom. Students should be preparing their speeches and visual aids for this project.

Manoa Mountains News for January 17, 2008

The Manoa Mountains prepared well for their Math Adventure presentations and did a great job on Monday. We had many creative posters that used lots of color and pictures to support their speeches. The speeches were carefully memorized, and everyone spoke clearly. The majority earned five stars and were very proud of their work. Many thanks to all of the parents and grandparents who attended the presentations. The students really enjoy having a special audience.

Camp Erdman provided our Manoa Mountains with many interesting and exciting experiences to help them learn about environmental issues and do some hands-on science investigations. The Group Challenge was great for team-building and everyone enjoyed the Olympic relays. Every group was a winner!

The Manoa Mountains were very responsible campers and tried very hard to participate in all of the activities with enthusiasm and interest. They learned a lot and had a wonderful time with all the other third and fourth graders. The camp staff is an international mix from many different countries around the world. Our students were attentive and well-behaved, and they were complimented for their good attention and focus.

Campfire was a fun time for singing and dancing with many silly songs that were enjoyed by everyone. It helped everyone to end the evening on a high note, and they were eager to get ready for bed after that. The food at camp has been improved by the new cook, and it was tasty and most enjoyable. Mr. Yamashiro bought everyone delicious treats from a bakery in Waialua to go with our breakfast. Many thanks to all of the volunteer chaperones, who helped to keep our students safe and happy while at camp!

Now that we have returned to school, it's time to continue with our work. We will have a jump rope demonstration team at our assembly today, and it should be fun to see their tricks. We will all participate in the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser next month.
