Welcome Back to School

Welcome back, everyone!  It's been a wonderful start to the school year with lots of fun and new things going on.
We continue to experience our new math series, called Investigations. This year, I will be teaching all the third graders and Mrs. Montes will be teaching all the fourth graders.

The Investigations curriculum is designed to engage students in making sense of mathematical ideas.
The thought behind this series is to help students make sense of mathematics and think mathematically, not just memorize facts. The Investigations curriculum covers areas such as rational numbers, mutiplication, division, geometry, measurement, data, and early algebra - and connections among them. Investigations teaches these concepts using a hands-on approach, which is why your child will be coming home playing lots of interesting games with you.

Please support your child by asking questions like:
•What is the problem asking you to figure out?
•Does this remind you of any other problem?
•What part of the problem do you already know how to solve?
•What is a good place to start?
•What have you figured out so far?
•Would drawing a picture or diagram help?
•How can I help you (without telling you an answer)?
If you would like to share any thoughts with me about how your child is doing with their homework, please feel free to send me a note or e-mail.

Please look over the additional material concerning Investigations in this Thursday's packet.
Also in the packet, you will find a welcome letter and information concerning Parent Intake. E-mail me as soon as possible with dates and times that work for you.

I look forward to seeing you all at Open House and having you experience Investigations first-hand!

Be sure to check out our Gallery next week for photos of the first week of school!
