Division, writing, and our changing island

This week we are beginning to discuss division. We are starting off by understanding how multiplication problems and division problems are related and how, if students know their basic multiplication facts, they also know their basic division facts.

In writing, we are starting to publish a new set of writing pieces. We have created a new peer editing checklist, which includes checking to make sure our pieces are high stakes (correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and paragraph use) before we consider it our final piece.

Our discussion of how our island is changing is still going on in Hawaiian Studies. As a class, we have narrowed down our focus to three main questions: 1) Is construction hurting or helping our island? 2) Is our island getting bigger or smaller? and 3) Is our island changing in the same ways as or in different ways from other islands? Students are now thinking of which topic they want to research and what specific question in the topic they would like to answer. This is an opportunity for students to choose a subject that really interests them. Please ask your child what topic they are planning to study, and discuss with them possible questions they would like to research.

Check back next week!
