Math and the games that we play

During our morning math workshops, we have been playing different math games that focus on addition and counting. After gaining some experience with these, we discussed creating our own board games. We started off by talking about some of our favorite board games and thinking about how we use math in these games. We discovered that math can be found in all of the ones we discussed, from determining probability while using dice and spinners to looking for patterns and developing strategies. After determining what we needed to plan for in order to create our own games, students got right to work. The games should be completed next week.

On Wednesday, we looked at how math is involved in our favorite sports. We found that math plays a role in almost all of them, eg., counting beats to the music in dance, figuring out a batter's runs batted in (rbi), and calculating how far a runner runs in track. Math really does have a huge impact on how we play!

Tomorrow we will take a look at how math can help us win contests! (Think jellybeans in a jar!)
