It's hard to believe that this is already the fifth week of summer school! This week, in order to prepare for our end-of-the-summer celebration next Friday, we have been busy party planning. Our class is realizing that parties don't just happen on their own. There is quite a bit of planning that must be done before hand.
In order to begin planning, we first discussed what we should have at our party. We decided that a good party has food, drinks, decorations, games, and give-aways! Since math makes us hungry, we started our planning by breaking up into different groups and assigning each group to be in charge of a different type of food or drink. The groups then had to search through books and websites to find different recipes that they thought their classmates might like. They created surveys to figure out which recipe they should make for their class. Next week they will graph the data they collected from the surveys and choose which recipe to make. Once they choose a recipe, they will have to modify the quantities of the ingredients to make sure they have enough for everyone. We will make our recipes the day before and the day of our party.
Students also had the job of finding out which pizza place would be the best deal for our class. After learning how much money we had to spend on pizza, looking at different menus from various pizza places, and learning about the different sizes of pizza, students were given the task of finding which pizza place would give us the most pizza for our money. Next week, students will have to figure out how we should cut our pizza so that everyone has a fair share and that we have the least amount of leftovers.
We would like to invite our families to our classroom next Friday, July 20 at 11:00 a.m. to see what we have accomplished this summer. Look for an invitation in today's packet!
