A special visitor and Hawaiian Studies

On Tuesday we had a special guest visit our classroom. Ms. Hetty Chang, a reporter for NBC news in Las Vegas, visited our class to talk to us about her job. She explained how she had to find her story ideas, interview people, write her own stories, edit her own stories and video footage, and then present her finished piece on the news. And she does this all in a day's work! She also showed us pictures of her interview with presidential candidate Barack Obama and her visit to Beijing for the recent Olympics. I think she definitely inspired some future careers in the news!
This week we also started thinking about how our Hawaiian Islands were created. In class we read two legends - one about how Maui pulled up the islands and the other about Pele. Students were then asked to create their own hypothesis of how our islands were created. Students also drew pictures of their hypotheses to help explain their logic. As we learn about the creation of our islands, students will revisit their hypotheses and make any necessary changes.
Election Day is almost here! Today we cast our vote for president through Scholastic News. We mailed in our ballots, and they will be counted in a nationwide vote conducted by Scholastic. This week we had more in-depth discussions about where the candidates stand on issues like education, health care, and the war in Iraq. Ask your child who he voted for and why!
