Math
Math consists of problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making, visual thinking activities. It covers various concepts (see below). The students will use two leading math resources, Investigations Math and Everyday Math along with supplementary resources. The students will also practice their test-taking skills with timed exercises to prepare them for standardized testing in April.
We review math concepts that the students covered last year to strengthen their foundation:

New concepts are explored and developed through class discussion, hands-on activities, homework, homework corrections, review quizzes, and integrating the development of new math concepts with science, social studies, and everyday problem-solving activities.
We have started our weekly math quizzes. The math homework for the weekend is for the students to correct any errors they may have made on the math quiz and show it to you for you to sign. I emphasize that although they should be trying to do well on their quizzes, it is even more important tfor them to learn from their mistakes. Mistakes can be learning experiences if the students reflect on them.
Science
Topics are covered in a variety of ways, such as hands-on experiments (using the scientific process of hypothesis: recording materials, procedure, data collection, and conclusion), reading comprehension, research reports, and visual aids. Some content areas include:
*Astronomy: Universe and solar system, scientific theory, evolution and
theological beliefs
*Earth science: Geology, atmosphere, natural resources, the Hawaiian archipelago, and North America
*Physical science: Light, matter, energy, forces, simple machines, temperature, solids, liquids and gases
*Life science: Life processes - cells, plant systems, and ecosystems
- Human body - circulatory, nervous, respiratory, digestive, muscular, skeletal, and reproductive systems
- Puberty Education - changes in the body and behavior, personal hygiene, and health
The Planet Inquiry Project will be primarily worked on in class so that we can focus on the step-by-step process of generating a research report. We want the students to take pride in their research work at every step of the inquiry process and self-evaluate and refine their work as they proceed.
