Week Sixteen: November 26th - November 30th

It's hard to believe that 16 weeks have already gone by and there are only 26 more weeks left to go until the last week of May - and that includes 4 weeks of vacation!!

In Language Arts and Social Studies, we have been reading Blood On the River, by Elisa Carbone.  We are also reading our history text book, A History of US, by Joy Hakim.

On Friday, November 30th, the upper elementary classes, Grades 3, 4 and 5, attended the HTY (Honolulu Theatre for Youth) production of a holiday favorite, "Christmas Talk Story."

Thank you to LS's mom for bringing in delicious ice cakes to celebrate her birthday!  Thank you to TK's mom for bringing in fancy cookies and chocolate-covered pretzels and strawberries to celebrate her birthday!

There will be no chapel this coming Monday, 12/3, as we will be having our traditional Christmas Chapel on Thursday, 12/6, from 8:00 am to 9:00 am, in the elementary school dining room.  In keeping with tradition, the 5th graders are the lead characters in the Christmas Story.  LK will play the role of Mary, and SO will play the role of Joseph.  The rest of the 5th graders have speaking roles or stage assistant responsibilities.  If your schedule allows, you are more than welcome to stop by and join us!  Also, if your child will be out of school on this day, please let the office or me know so that we can reassign parts for the Christmas play.

We will be going to the library on Thursday, 12/6, following the chapel.  Please remind your child to bring any library books with them to return that day.  We will be checking out fantasy books for the month of December.

On Friday, 12/7, there will be no school for the students as this is a Professional Development Day for faculty and staff to prepare for Parent Conferences the following week: Thursday, 12/13, and Friday, 12/14.

On Wednesday, 12/12, from 8:00 am to 9:00 am, we will be getting together with our 6th grade buddies for the second time this year.  We will all be in Scudder Dining Hall doing a holiday craft activity and having a light snack.

Assignments for the week:

1.  Reading Log Genre Book Report for December - Fantasy.  Due when we return from Winter Vacation - January 8th.

2.  Expository Essay - "What is an American?" Rough draft due on 12/6.  Final draft due on 12/19.

3.  Daily summary in story map of sequence of events after reading Blood on the River.

(No grammar packet this week.)
