Week 22: January 21st - January 25th

 Weeks Seventeen, Eighteen, Nineteen

These last weeks prior to our Winter Break in December went by in a fabulous flash of bright brilliance!!  The 5th graders were preparing for Portfolio Conferences, rehearsing for the  Christmas Program and their now famous "Feliz Navidad"  partner dance, and getting ready for Winter Break!!

Weeks Twenty, Twenty-One, and Twenty-Two

Upon our return on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, the 5th graders transitioned beautifully into the rigorous demands of second semester!  They were all thrilled to finally be able to turn over their HUGSS duty to their 4th grade colleagues!  In Language Arts, we have been working very hard on our Poetry Unit.  We have been reading a variety of poems written by a variety of poets.  The students have been analyzing a variety of poems for specific techniques that poets employ when writing poems, such as:  rhyme, repetition, imagery, metaphor, simile, and alliteration.  All of the 5th grade students will be entering at least one (1) poem into the upcoming "9th Annual Star Poets Poetry Contest," sponsored by Windward Community College and Starbucks Coffee Hawaii.  (Parents:  Please make sure to sign the Parent Release Form and return it ASAP!) 

Our January Book Report genre is Adventure/Survival.  All of the students went to the MPI Library on Wednesday, 1/9, to check out Adventure/Survival books.  Therefore, all of the students should have a book and should be reading it daily for at least 30-60 minutes.  The Book Report Form will be due on Monday, February 4th.

In Social Studies, we will begin studying the events leading up to the formation of each of the original thirteen colonies.

For homework, the students should be brainstorming, drafting, writing, editing, and revising their three poems that are due this Friday for the contest.  They should also be reading their Adventure/Survival books and completing the Book Report Form that is due on 2/4!
