10/2-10/6: Invitations, Post Office, and Rainbow World

At Monday's morning meeting, the class discussed what they should write on their invitations to their parents for parent night. They then sat down to create their special invitations. When they were finished, they each folded their invitation, placed it in an envelope, and put a stamp on it.

During exploration time, CL and LY built a high-rise zoo for all their animals. It was great seeing them work with symmetry and balance in their building.

GA and TK built a "Light House Boat" (3D) and then were able to represent it in a drawing (2D). TKS was able to do the same thing with his building of a "Golden Pyramid Light." SK and BH spent the morning under the loft. They sorted the new transparent pattern blocks on the light table. BH shared a picture of his neighbors from his summer journal.

On Tuesday we took an all-school photo. It took over thirty minutes for the photographer to organize us! We then set out on our first field trip off campus. Once at the post office, we were given the behind-the-scenes tour and were able to cancel our stamps and play with a P.O. box. We then stood in line to give our letters to the mail clerk.DSC04501.jpg

The Golden Owls then decided to go shopping for a light snack. We headed for Safeway. At Safeway we separated into three groups. Each group was responsible for purchacing either cups, juice, or crackers. We enjoyed our snack outside Safeway with curious customers passing by. On our way back to the bus, we stopped off at the open market. We saw a variety of fruits and vegetables. One vendor gave each of us an apple banana. Please check the gallery for our many pictures of our field trip.

On Wednesday the first group of children (BW, RB, EKS, TK, and CH) took a trip to the "Magical Rainbow Room." The children explored light, shadows, and color in a magical way.

Ms. Jordan set up a table with a variety of unusal materials to paint with. The children used a bottle cap, a sponge, and natural brushes to create new designs and patterns on their paper. CL and BH invited two friends, RM and AR from Ms. Kazari's class, to build a bug house out of natural materials.

Thank you to CH and his family for sharing moon cakes with us.

On Thursday the second group (SK, GA, CL, and TKS) enjoyed their visit into what they called "the Rainbow Room." The children made a rainbow house, danced to music, and made stars change color.

The Party Planners (TR, EC, RB, BW, and KO) met to write their letter to President Rice. An update on the Party Planners will be posted online and in the classroom very soon.

Ms. Jordan set up a table in the classroom to explore color through water, eye droppers, and coffee filters. The children mixed different colors of water to make new colors and to create beautiful colored paper.

On Friday the children again explored the colors through water. The Golden Owls also told many stories that were acted out during story time.

At C.E. Ms. Loriann read us a story about painting and our emotions. After sharing our thoughts, we used water and paint brushes to paint the ground with pictures of things that make us happy.
