Party Planners: Plans for a Pinata

On November 6, 2006, the Party Planners met to discuss their ideas about the unicorn pinata.

RB: "We could put bows on it."
EC: "How about the unicorn color going to be purple and white and pink?"
KO: "How about red and green?"

The group sat down to design their unicorn through individual drawings. When the group was done, they had eight very different designs. Ms. Leigh spread the drawings out on the table and explained to the group that we needed to choose one drawing to use as our pinata guide. Each member proudly picked up his/her own drawing. Ms. Leigh observed that the planners all chose their own designs. The group then giggled and began looking at the other designs saying, "I like this one, How about this one, We could use this."

The group decided that they would draw another picture, but this time asa group. They would collaborate on one design. EC volunteered to draw the horn, and RB decided to draw the body. TR expressed her interest in drawiing the legs, tail, and bows. BW and KO used Jan Ken Po (Rock, Paper, Scissors) to decide who would draw the face. BW won but agreed to let KO help her in the drawing of the face.

A Collaborative Piece

On November 13, 2006, the group decided to meet again to work on their collaborative drawing. To their surprise, JD, a classmate, had come to school with pictures of pinatas.JD knew that the Party Planners were planning to make a pinata and intentionally brought in something he thought might help the group. They started the meeting with JD sharing his pictures of the pinatas. The group noticed that there were no unicorns, but did agree that the horse was the closest relative.

After closely observing the pictures of the pinatas, the group then revisted their individual drawings that they had done the week before. By revisiting theirearlier drawings, the group wasable to discuss and think about their previous ideas and the ideas of others. They used this newfound inspiration to create a magical drawing of a magical creature through drawing, coloring, and decorating.

After Thanksgiving break, the Party Planners will use their collaborative designas a guide as theymake a pinata with the help of Ms. Leigh and Ms. Jordan.
