Preschool

This week in Ms. Kazari's class, we began to explore clay in small groups. In the atelier, I set up blocks of clay so the children could experience using their whole bodies and all of their senses with them...

In Ms. Iris's class, the children have been drawing a lot! We have begun to explore drawing materials such as Sharpies, pens, and pencils, and how we can add color to the drawings. This study helps children know when to use a fine tip or a fat tip to better express lines in their drawings. After one small group had discussed ideas of what we could make to put all the bugs in that we had been finding, the children drew pictures to represent their ideas. This week we made copies of their drawings and talked about they way we can use some of our coloring materials.

Mixing/painting
Also today we had a small group meet in the atelier to mix up some more paint for our palette. After doing this, the children painted together using these colors. The children discovered many new ways to use the brush through their huge painting. They experimented with rolling the brush, splattering the paint, and making huge lines and little lines. MF even found out that he could use the brush to create little circles, shown below.DSC04157.jpg

In kindergarten, the children will begin to extend their ideas about what they are learning in their classrooms into the atelier. For each topic they study, we will have a discussion and then create a project using their ideas. This week we had discussions about the human body and what the children have learned and what they are interested in. We also took time to go over drawing and coloring materials because we do a lot of drawing to represent our ideas. We explored thick and thin Sharpies, drawing pencils, colored pencils, and thick and thin markers. We also talked about how and for what they are used.
