Welcome back, new and returning students. I hope the summer was restful and refreshing!
The atelier is an art studio where children begin to explore, discover, and create meaningful relationships with many different materials and techniques, e.g., drawing, painting, sewing, wire, photography, and clay, to name a few. In building these relationships, children begin to create a library of materials from which to draw as projects and ideas begin to arise. In preschool we build this foundational library. As children go on to Kindergarten, they add to their understanding of concepts and work. In preschool and Kindergarten, the children use artistic media as languages to express their own ideas and concepts through small group work in the atelier. ![]()

This week in the three-year-old and the four-year-old class, we spent time painting and getting to know each other.

In Kindergarten we spent time talking about the studio and its uses -- for material units and for inquiry projects --and I handed out sketch books that the children will be using this year. We also spent time drawing larger scale pictures on butcher paper on the floor.
