We also talked about prayer, and discussed what we know about prayer. Students described prayer as talking to God, thanking God for something/someone ("Thank you, God, for my mom and dad...Thank you, God, for our teachers...Thank you, God, for our school"), praying for someone ("I pray for my knee because it's sore...I pray for my fish who died...I pray for my grandpa who's on a trip), and loving God. Other students mentioned positions that people take when praying (bowed heads, folded hands, quiet bodies, legs criss-crossed with palms on their knees facing up).
We also talked about who we think God is. Some ideas were: "God is the creator of: everything, the world, galaxies...God creates people and helps people and heals our cuts...God makes peace in the world...God is a man who loves people and the world, and cares for people...God is a spirit." We talked why some people bow their heads when they pray, as people bow or kneel when they are greeting a king or queen.
We also shared our feelings during Ohana Time. Ohana Time is when we pass around a peace stick and take turns sharing how we are feeling, from 1 to 5, 5 being very happy. In CE class, we are always able to "pass" (not take a turn) if we don't feel like sharing. We can share what number we are feeling, and/or we can share WHY we are feeling that way. ("I feel #5 because I get to have a sleepover...I feel #3 because I'm tired...I feel #1 because I'm mad at my brother.")
This week we started talking about feelings, starting with "happy." We read a book called What Do You Love? and talked about what we love/what makes us happy. We shared our name tags, where we drew something that we love (family, rainbows, Pokemon, cats). We also started taking a survey about our favorite fruit, recess activity, animal, and classroom activity. We will share these results next week and see what these surveys reveal about us!
