Thank you for joining us for our Informal Jump Start Kindergarten Presentation. What a nice way to wrap up the summer! I have truly enjoyed working with you and your children this summer. I was touched by all of your thoughtful gifts.

Auntie Margo, from the Manoa Heritage Center, came over today for a special visit! She brought her newspaper, drawing canvas, markers, glitter, and colored paper. She talked about different occupations in our community and how hats are important.
Here are some ideas from our class:
M.F.: "Policeman."
A.G.: "Farmer."
S.S.: "Mr. K.'s cowboy hat."
T.P.T.: "Train Conductor."
C.H.: "Goofy and Donald Duck."
E.C: "Fireman."
J.M.: "Cook."
J.D.: "Policeman."
Each student got to decorate his/her own hat. We marched around the classroom to show off our fancy hats!

Mrs. Sawyer's 3rd - 5th grade students have been visiting our Jump Start Kindergarten class almost every Friday. The Kindergartners select their favorite books from our library to read with their reading buddy. This is a great way to build our MPI community. The children are VERY excited to have reading buddies!

We read and write every day! All children in Jump Start Kindergarten are readers and writers, whether they are learning the alphabet or writing sentences, and whether reading their names or reading chapter books.

Some of the daily literacy activities in which the children participate include: learning new songs and poems, reading the daily schedule, shared reading of a big book (phonics lessons are often incorporated into these times), storytelling, working on their Hawaiian colors book and Hawaiian islands fact book.

Last week, Mrs. Ikehara set up a tour of the Farmer's Market at Manoa Marketplace. We looked at different fruits and vegetables that are locally grown. Both classes were also given a special tour of Safeway. Mr. Justin allowed us to taste cheese, water the produce, walk in the freezer, and smell a salmon.
